Does a jacket size 40R correspond to Medium or Small?

I always buy M, but I have seen size tables (e.g., the Drakes' cashmere cardigan) which make a 40 chest size a small. I'm a bit puzzled. Of course, generally I understand that it's best to try and see what fits. I'm just curious what the industry standards are...

Thanks,

JD

depends on the designer - I'd say an american 40r is a large whereas a european 40r is more medium.

Generally most sites will consider a 40R a large.

When I buy a RTW coat/jacket, it is a 40R.
When I buy a RTW shirt from among those sized S, M, L, XL, etc ... I almost always wear a M.
When I buy a RTW sweater sized S, M, L, XL, etc ... I usually wear a M ... but sometimes a L.

40R is a medium. The size tables may be giving the actual measurements off the garments, a 40 inch chest is pretty normal for a size small sweater.

40r could be anything: from small to large,as the actual measurements would change based on the manufacturer, model etc...formal sizes on the label mean nothing

I am a 40L, so basically the same as you. I have to wear a small in some designers to a large in others; it really depends on the cut and shape. For instance, RLBL runs pretty slim and I vary between a M and a L in that, and don't have to size up in the suits like many do.

A 40-inch chest (20" pit-to-pit) is a small, or a medium on the small side. A size 40 jacket is usually 21-22.5 inches around the chest, and corresponds to a medium in most cases.

I wear a 36R, and both 38R jackets and basically every single 'medium' out there fits like a tent on me.

A 40R is like the definition of medium suit! From my young and unprofessional opinion.
