Does ”original shearling” mean real sheep’s wool?

I’m looking for a shearling jacket for the freezing cold swedish winter.

While scouring the internet for used shearling jackets, the words ”Original Shearling” keeps showing up, often in combination with the same logo.

Does this mean that the fur is genuine? Or is the term ”original” simply a way of giving off the impression of real fur, without actually claiming that it is?

If this is the case, how do you determine if sheep’s wool is legitimate just from pictures? Or are there any tips in general to find real shearling jackets on the internet?

Grateful for any help I can get!

'Shearling' is the tanned hide of a lamb or sheep with the fur still attached. There will be suede on one side and fur on the other. The finished product (usually) has the suede placed to the inside of the garment, but sometimes the material will be worked the other way round. The look, depending on the need for warmth, can be heavy and rustic (in shades of beige/brown) or silky soft, elegant and in bright colours.

It's one of the mysteries of the universe, we will never know what the people who designed the tags where even thinking.

I asked this question in another thread, got no response. Since you are highly knowledgeable about leathers, I thought I'd try. Any reason why there's no shearling from goatskin? The leather would be much tougher and more durable. Is it that goat's wool is too scratchy?

Thank you, how do I determine if the fur is fake?

So irritating. How else can I determine if the fur is real if not for tags? My strategy right now has been to look for designer brands with higher prices and just hope it’s real fur, but it would be a waste if I could buy a similar one for $70.

Sorry to be irritating. With the information you have already received, its up to you to decide, you haven't given us any real information.

It's real shearling if you can clearly see the original hide or hasn't been piled or woven, this easy to tell with shearling as stated.

I also find real shearling to be rather heavy compared to synthetics.

Thank you Simon, I meant of course that the misleading tags are irritating, not you. Thank you for the tips!

Woopsy.

Heres a comparison from a sheepskin hide and my shearling jacket. With that you should be able to be more informed.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
