I've had some suits made for me and I thought the length of the sleeves was just right. Not short but not hanging too long like I usually get with off-the-rack. However, I've noticed that when I wear them with French cuffs - and I had those shirts made custom too- not very much of the shirt cuffs show. WHen I have my arms hanging straight down you can only see a sliver of cuff; the cufflinks not at all. When I bend my arm upwards, sometimes you can catch a glimpse of the cufflinks, but sometimes I would have to pull the shirt sleeve down in order to make that happen.

Does it sound like my shirts sleeves are too short, or my coat sleeves too long? Is it bad form to not see lots of cuff when you wear French cuffs? It seems like the cufflinks are going to waste. I often see photographs of men with their cufflinks showing wide and clear... please share your experiences....

Standing with your arms by your side, I'd expect not to see cufflinks showing.

Impossible to tell if shirt or coat sleeves are too long without pics.

No more than 1/4" of shirt cuff showing works for me. Some like to show more.

Yes, everyone always says don't show more than half an inch of shirt cuff in that position... but I'm confused because I'm sure that I have seen it like that before, with cufflinks showing and all, and the arms hanging down straight...

So I guess what I want to know is, from those of you who achieve that effect, do you have your suits made with the sleeves extra short, in order to show your links?

Sounds like you want your suit "Chris Gardner" style. He's the guy that the Will Smith movie The Pursuit of Happiness was based on, and the only guy I've ever seen pull it off. For some reason I always think of him when I hear this. You can google more pics of him, his sleeves really are super-short, even when they hang at his side.

French cuffs from different makers will position the link closer, or farther, from the edge. This could create a difference. I like to show more cuff than 1/4", so sometimes the edge of a link will show.

Showing enough cuff to expose a cufflink without arms raised just makes the shirt look too long or the suit sleeves too short. Cufflinks are a subtle piece of jewelry that you will occasionally glimpse - they aren't for bling.

Lol.... no, I'm not at all sure that I want that, it's just been on my mind. What I don't get is when I see it on Joe Biden in this pic, he seems unlikely, and I never show that much cuff even when my arms are raised

well his arm is bent 180 degrees, which drags the sleeve down even more, plus some fabrics tend to ride up the arm. I suspect that pic is a result of the 2 factors

I show a 1/4" or less with my arms hanging straight by my side, but I own some suits that show almost 1/2" and some that end exactly with the shirt cuff. IMO showing too much cuff is worse than not showing enough because it reminds me too much of Thom Browne.

That sounds pretty ridiculous. If you want to show off your cufflinks that much take your jacket off or walk around with your arms straight out in front - zombie style ...

My cufflinks show, very well, in their display cases at home.

But not when I am wearing my coat/jacket, only when I take that off are they visable.
