Do you wear Cologne?

Yes. Everyday. What I wear depends on mood mainly. For the most part I like woody scents over fruity/fresh scents. I have several that I wear regularly: Tumulte by Christian Lacroix, Aprege Pour Homme by Lanvin Paris, Amber Pour Homme by Prada, John Varvatos Original and Blue Jeans for Men by Versace (this is my casual weekend scent and the "freshest" of the bunch). I tend to get the most compliments when I wear either the Lacroix or Varvatos.

I never do. I find that the scent is off-putting and that my natural musk is more than adequate to attract the ladies.

What type? In general and what women like.

Of course. I wear it every day, though not to the gym or anything like that.

I roughly break it down like so (in order of preference):

Cool weather:
Bulgari - Black
John Varvatos

Warmer weather:
Bond No. 9 - Bleeker St
Creed - Himalaya
Caron - The Third Man
Hermes - Terre D'Hermes
Bulgari - Aqua

Women like what they like, it is hard to pin down a specific fragrance that has universal appeal. No matter how much they like a scent, sometime it is just wrong for the occasion. Like wearing Thierry Mugler's A*men to work.

More then trying to find the scent women like, you should find one that suits you and your style and personality. Once you have found a good one, wear it consistently. In my experience a women will notice your 'signature scent' much more readily then a man would and come to associate it with you.

Sure, on most (but not every) days.

My rotation is pretty small but covers most seasons & situations:

Eau d'Issey (Issey Miyake) - my summer "go-to"
Eternity (CK) - great for more casual summer days
Platinum Egoiste (Chanel) - very versatile all round business scent
HOT Always (Bond No 9) - rarely used, mostly on winter nights
Silver Mountain Water (Creed) - my new favourite and I'd happily adopt it as a "signature scent" but I actually want to try to save it for more special occasions, so the magic doesn't wear off.
Blu Notte (Bulgari) - summer evenings or winter daytime.

I agree with Bryan above - there's no point thinking about "which women like", because they each prefer something different and some prefer none at all. Just go with what YOU like. Having said that, the Silver Mountain Water, the Eau d'Issey and the Platinum Egoiste are the ones that have got me compliments. Considering I've only worn the SMW two or three times so far and it got complimented twice, that's a pretty good hit rate. But it might just be coincidence, so my advice is just to get cologne you enjoy wearing.

Yes, all the time, to the gym, to work, sitting around the house, in the morning, at night, even to bed.

I'm now down to about 40 scents after a good deal of closet-cleaning, but I've had close to 150-200 at the peak. There is an entire universe out there to explore beyond the usual "designer" suspects... Lorenzo villoresi, Creed (of course), L'artisan parfumeur, Freddie Malle, The Different Company, Montale, just to name a few.

As for what women like...

Like asking "what shoes/suits will women like?" 99.9% will go with what is trendy or immediately discernible. Nevertheless, there are some exceptions; I had a complete stranger (the check-out lady at the grocery store) keep going on about my L'artisan Poivre Piquant, which is a really odd, milk/honey/pepper fragrance that I expected nobody but fellow hardcore fragrance fans to appreciate. Overall, though, i think the key is NOT to overdo it with whatever you wear; subtlety and a good attitude with otherwise good grooming habits and manners does wonders with EITHER sex.

If you want a recommendation for something simple, understated, and classic without being overly expensive, the above mentions of Guerlain heritage and cartier Declaration are good ones. Chanel Pour Monsieur, or Tiffany pour homme, Chanel Allure, or Guerlain Vetiver are also good ones that never seem to go out of style.

More recently, Prada Amber PH is a really unique one, as is Narciso Rodriguez's new men's scent. Viktor&Rolf Antidote PH is an odd one, but still very classy.

Yes and no.

I don't wear what's known as Cologne, i wear Egyptian musk/oil. Different scents like Coco Mango, Black Coconut, Opium and a few others are in my collection. Women LOVE IT. Whenever i put it on and hug a friend, they ALWAYS compliment on how good i smell. It's not strong, doesn't burn your nose, leave a nasty taste in people's mouths, or other problems that i find traditional cologne, or the cologne men normally wear have.

+10 to Egyptian Musks/oils.

I would'nt leave home naked, unshaven or without a scent.

Perfect day to expect or dating a young lady: L'Eau de Paco Rabanne, Creed Imperial Millesime
Nice Day (Summer): Hugh Parsons (Yellow), Penhaligon's Castile
Nice Day (Winter) Hugh Parsons (Blue)
Indifferent: Eau d'Issey, Chanel Platinum Egoiste
Lots of Work ahead: Creed Vetiver Original
Feeling bully-ish: Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet
Really bad mood: Acqua di Parma

But these rules are not set in stone.

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
