I know the rest of the world, especially Europe, gives workers little break around lunch. Most often after lunch I"m a bit sleepy and will take a short 15-20 min nap. I use the Imak HappyNeck

which works great. Do you nap? And why am I sleepy after lunch? Do I eat too much?

Lee - so how do you get away with it for even 15 - 20 minutes? Do you just close your office door and set an alarm? Or if you sit out in the open and do this, then

I certainly want to nap on some days, but just wind up drinking one or more strong coffees in lieu of.

Close office door almost completely and face the back of my chair to door.

Sleepiness after lunch probably comes from ancestral times where at noon time most of the food that was hunted was eaten already and it was a time to enjoy a little break. That, and if you eat a lot of carbs in your diet you'll get more sleepy after lunch, though this will vary with the individual.

A short 20 minute break is enough to get you going, and you don't even need to lose consciousness to benefit from it, as you won't enter the deep stages of sleep like when you do it at night, so you can come out of it pretty quickly. Just to be safe set your cell phone with an alarm

I can't afford an after lunch nap in this economy.

Very common to put one's head down on the desk and take a post-lunch nap in China, esp. in the South. No one is self-concious about at all. I've taken to doing it occasionally. It's a good refresher if you have the time.

It all depends on how much/what I eat. Though always having one would be nice.

After lunch, I cant help but feel tired. A 20-30 minute nap is great to take on the rest of the day.

I've found to be more productive when having a small or light lunch and eat the same amount later in the afternoon. And after eating not that much, I never feel like sleeping.

Sleepiness after lunch is almost exclusively caused by carbs. If you eat a sandwich, or any kind of pasta, rice, bread, etc. you will most likely feel sleepy afterward, depending on your genetics. Try eating a light salad one day as an experiment; you won't be sleepy that afternoon.

I really hate how corporate America is so enamored with pretenses. Sleeping on the job is seen as a travesty and sign of insolent laziness, when in reality, a 30-minute nap would improve most workers' productivity significantly during the afternoon.
