I am something of a packrat, but I finally ditched many of my old textbooks (20+ years old) this past spring when the basement flooded and I was forced to move stuff around. I kept all the literature, though.

Most are gone. Some I use to make arguments. Some I use because they can be used in place of Ambien.

Kept the good books, sold off the rest. I did keep quite a few of my MBA textbooks though for future reference. I kept a few notable ones only for the novelty of cracking them open, something I didn't always do when school was in session.

I notice I kept a couple of economics books, mostly by accident though.

resold all my college textbooks but kept my casebooks from law school because they all have the same binding/coloring and look pretty cool on the bookshelf. of course, there is a 99% chance i'll never open them, but i think they look neat.

If you don't plan on going back to school then I would get rid of them. If you plan on going back you might want to hold on to them.

I am still in the process of getting rid of mine. Most of undergrad are gone. I still have a few left from law. The case books are worthless (for law use), only value is to donate them. The code books still have a bit of life. I also have my accounting books....those actually are pretty useful for reference, so I still have about 70% of those.

I keep all books that have information that I may need in the future, otherwise I try to sell them. But most of the time I just throw them in the recycling, because getting 50 cents back on a 100 dollar book isnt worth it.

I've kept all of my texts that were for courses in my major.

Mechanical Engineering textbooks are really good resources and are filled with lots of useful charts.
