my parents had a steath one built into the floor in the house they built, i dont remember much about it, other than it would have been a giant pain to find it even if you knew reasonably where to look...you had to peel up some carpet and there was a false floor over it.

It can be a good thing for documents and the like you want to protect from damage. Otherwise, unless we are talking about a gunsafe they attract unwanted attention.

A numbers of years ago when I lived in Connecticut there was a string of house burglaries and a lot of them were inside jobs, knowing who had safes. Apparently it was a delivery guy working with a safe company that knew who had them.

Again, if it's something so precious an important that it would require a safe for me to have peace of mind, I don't really want to own it.

The deeds to my condo and other papers I keep at a bank. My passport is in a drawer by my bed. I live in a condo that would probably be extremely difficult to burglarize so I suppose I don't have much paranoia.

I have two safes for my guns--one for handguns, another for long guns. We keep some documents and jewelry in them as well. It is sheer folly for anyone who has more than a few guns of any value not to have safe to secure them. It would probably not be too difficult for a team of determined thieves to haul them off, but it would be both time consuming and very conspicuous, both of which are undesirable to thieves.

I have a couple for various places I live. My concern is not for fire or water but for theft. I don't do the cleaning and hire someone to come in and do it. They have to check in at the front desk so I have one that cannot be easily hidden under a jacket or some such.

I keep important papers in there, passport, photocopies of all cards, extra cards etc. No matter how good someone thinks they can hide something, someone who has unescorted access to your place every week for hours, and is determined, can find anything. And though I am probably profiling, I consider them to have a higher probability of grabbing and leaving it all behind.

It is really just common sense.

edit: I should add that is for the place I am at now. My main place has one that is quite large, and would not be able to be secreted away in any fashion.

I know what you mean about cleaning staff (not to generalize, but just as a single individual with bad intentions). My father had jewelry and cufflinks go "missing" after having someone come clean his house.

Don't really need one. I have 4 firearms in my condo, but the security is so good here it would be nearly impossible to break in. My door is 8ft of steel, so if another resident tried to break in they would need a blow torch and a ram of some sort.

I have a buddy who has a safe room. It's behind a shelf in his master closet. Pretty cool.

I have heard so many stories about people buying a house that had a safe, then cleaning it out and leaving it opened because of break ins.

My mother has an armoured fire-proof filing cabinet that is basically a safe, but looks like a filing cabinet. It was something my dad bought long ago and I will say it's a pretty good solution in that it protects social security, financial docs, and pictures. In the end it is more personal stuff than jewels and gold bars.

I see a safe can be safe, but at the same time bring bad company. It's just like everything else, if someone else wants it more than you, they will steal it one way or another.

I think a hidden room would be cool but I dont have anything that valuable. I would rather have a larger closet.
