Yep, feel totally safe, if not safer. I get the impression people think you're someone that shouldn't be touched in the first place. Compared to more "normal" clothes, you have to admit it is far less "punk" like.

I also rarely wear suits all the time. [IMG]

I don't know about feeling safe, but I know that I feel self-empowerment and authority.

    That feels really good!

Walk like you know more than they do.

Then again, I'm 6'3" and look like a dick.

I was in a dive bar the other night after work with a friend. Felt perfectly safe.

My father always taught me that in order not to get mugged is to exude an air that you own the world when in dodgy areas. They might think you're strapped.

Years ago there had been a few muggings in the neighborhood I lived in at that time. One night, around 2am, I was walking the three blocks from the bar to my apartment. I see a guy on a bicycle at the end of the block. He sees me and turns around riding towards me.

As our distance closes I slowly unzip my black leather jacket and slide my right hand inside and keep it there. Now only 20 feet or so away, I stare him right in the face and turn slightly towards him. He turns away and goes down the next block.

Next evening a guy who lives two blocks over, who left the bar 30mins after I did gets mugged at knife point by a guy riding a bicycle.

Maybe he thought I had a gun, a knife, a police radio. Or he just thought, "This guy is gonna put up a fight."

The thing is, you don't have to look like the toughest guy in the world.

You just have to look tougher than the next guy to climb up the subway steps.

It works. I remember a few years ago there were several reports of hipsters in Williamsburg being slashed by machetes by people on bikes.

I hate quoting just to say I like this... but I like this. So true.

I look at some men and see victim just waiting to happen. Often the polite, gentle types. Makes me want to cry sometimes [IMG]

Or rather, make sure that you are strapped in a dodgy area while wearing a suit. It's very easy to conceal while wearing a jacket...

I can't decide if it's the suit that makes me feel safe, or the (actually mean) great dane and 9MM I am usually carrying in my 'hood.
