Do You Add Working Button Holes on Your RTW Jacket Cuffs?

Funny thing, I bought on Wednesday a RTW sport jacket which had working button holes. But because I needed the sleeves shortened, that 'feature' would be eliminated.

For some reason I actually asked if I could get working holes after the sleeve was shortened but the tailor didn't feel confident with the request and I didn't care enough to go elsewhere.

Bit of an unnecessary affectation with RTW, I think. Although I would always ask for them on an MTM suit.

The term "functioning buttonholes" amuses me somewhat. Sure they undo, but everyone wears them done up, all the time. Do they really have a function?

One of my favourite subjects brought up again...
Who wears them done up? Obviously, at least one should be left undone!
(Actually, the tailor I am using charges extra for each functioning buttonhole, so I normally ask him to just make on of them functioning, because I like the way the sleeve ends when one button is left undone. But from what I see on SF I guess that I should consider having even the last button done up before leaving Spanish territory... people appear to have a "tackiness complex" out there...).

Just curious, what makes them an "unnecessary affectation" with RTW, but not an "unnecessary affectation" with MTM? Do they some how become "necessary" with MTM where they are not so with RTW?

Me too. I am earnestly curious about the answer to this question as well.

I see this type of situation mentioned a lot here. Are the NYC tailor's (Wilfred's, Bhambi's etc) the only guys that know how to shorten sleeves from the shoulder? or is it a cost issue?

It may be a case of having prople here who are slightly too anal about sleeve length and can't make up their minds.

With nice jackets that come w/ the sleeves basted & the buttons separate, always. Others are decided on a case by case basis....
