Ok, I really don't care much about celebrities, but I don't get the whole trampy thing. She was in a sex tape... I doubt she's the only celeb to ever tape herself having sex. Unfortunately hers got shown around the world. Other than that, what's so trampy about her? I really just think that ripping on paris hilton is part of the same trend that getting of 50 Cent's case became before the release of his second album. It's done so that you let everyone know you're "intellectual" as well, like in a room full of guys the "coolest" one in the room is the first one to say how "gay" something is, for fear of looking gay himself.

    Have I missed something?

I don't want to get on your case because it seems like you're trying to be genuine but the guy who tries to be the "voice of reason" with the thinly veiled bullshit "I'm soo above that" attitude is also a perennial clichÃ[IMG]. Let's get some things straight, Paris' video was not mistakenly released and 50 cent has always been a substanceless rapper, any one whose listened to his mixtapes will tell you that.

We live in a celebrity obsessed culture, so stop pretending like you only read the economist when there is clearly a copy of entertainment weekly in your bathroom.

It's because she doesn't consider sodomy strictly sex, obviously.
    Interesting loophole, that.

No, I'm saying that I don't pay much attention to it. Like I said, when I get really bored, I'll definately go read PerezHilton to hopefully get some nice nip slips or whatever. The point is, I've never seen Paris Hilton as being that bad. Same thing with Britney Spears. Ya she lip syncs, has no talent whatsoever, but she's probably a simple, very sweet girl.

A celebrity of that type that I HATE and could write pages about is someone like Pink. There's this whole new pop counterculture of making fun of other celebrities, and the whole "I'm actually very intelligent". Pink makes fun of people for getting plastic surgery and being pop princesses. Firstly, she was born good looking, secondly, the work she did to "get in the door" is as saccahrine, vapid and pop tart as any of them.

I'll definately read about a celebrity if there's something interesting. I'm quite interested in the opinions of certain actors like Johnny Depp, Edward Norton, Dustin Hoffman etc... the celebrity obsession is quite strongly linked with conspicuous consumption and generally very superficial issues. That simply doesn't interest me, and really, I think people are picking on the wrong celebs if you actually listen to what some of these people say/think.

PS. I don't know what mixtapes you've been listening to but How to Rob and his debut were considered some fairly gritty releases and he had both commercial and underground support. I have looked into the issue of 50 cent quite a bit, and even written a small writing assignment in a pop music history course. He's also another person who I think people are unfair to, but that's another topic.

She's trash, and if I never saw or heard about her again it would be a blessing from above.

My thoughts exactly. God, I have been saying that ever since the good-for-nothing, coke-snorting, porn-tape making whore came onto the "˜scene'.

No, Fok, that makes you a nerd of the capital variety. I'm an economist and I don't read The Economist. Yawn. [IMG]

I was at a friend's house the other night and between the 5 of us there were 12 degrees. All we did all night was talk about pop culture and watch Tivo'd MTV. Who the hell is this Danity Kane? They suck awfully bad.

Was the geopolitical juxtaposition of the current Middle East crises and how it relates to world markets, vis-Ã -vis world energy not an interestingly enough topic? [IMG]

It is ok for people with intellectual prowess to talk about non-intellectual topics. The trick however is to be able to talk about intellectual topics when they come up. This is what separates the erudite from the not.

I'm glad you didn't take my post too seriously, since it was meant to be a joke. Outside of their field I don't like to listen to actors or singers about any topic. I don't care who Rob Lowe is going to vote for and I cant understand why any one else does. Pink has her place in the spectrum, not a big fan of her Bush bashing. You're post above is my sentiment also.

PS. I wont knock his hustle or business acumen. His street stuff was generic and his first album was awesomely produced, I don't think he will ever outdo himself in that arena. Getting shot 9 times will give you street cred in spades but a rapper it makes not. Then again I mostly listen to underground hip hop so I cant be swayed when someone tries to convince of how great Juwelz Santana or other commercial rappers are. Dipset...Ditset...anyone?

Er, sounds like it could be. Easily. That is the one show (is it still on?) I really hate and I take pains to avoid it, which is saying a lot, coming from a man who will watch the gold channel if nothing else is on [IMG]
