Ever since moving in with my GF (now wife) about five years ago, I've been catless. A home without a cat is, for me, just a little bit empty-feeling. And anyway, I want our son to grow up with a cat--buddy, best friend, undisputed master....

And I really, really want a Bengal: an acquaintance has one, and they truly are as bright, inquisitive, and social as advertised. I just can't justify spending $500-600 on a purebred cat, and Bengals don't tend to show up at rescue shelters 'round here. Pity.

I know this is late, but considered a Manx?

I don't think $4000 is too much for a companion that you will keep for over a decade. Certainly a better value than an automobile.

That said, I am not allergic to cats but would consider spending a few thousand on a Birman or Bengal.

First - RJ - belated condolences on your cat. I don't know how I would handle losing any of mine.

    Kent,

From an accounting standpoint, if you amortize said cat over 10 years, you're looking at $400 per year or $33.33 per month. Not outrageous.

From an economic standpoint, I struggle with paying top dollar for purebreeds, when 3 of my 4 pets (two dogs, two cats) were unwanted strays. I couldn't imagine cherishing them more just for having papers, especially when there are plenty at SPCA waiting for homes. Just my humble opinion, but I also do not have cat or dog allergies.

This looks suspiciously like a co-op kitchen. I spent 3 years looking looking at these. Is that Royal or maybe New Guild?

Helios. I hang out at New Guild pretty often. I couldn't stand to live at a co-op, though.

It was super fun when I was 18-21 but I couldn't do it now. I lived in Avalon, Seneca, and French House.

A friend of mine just moved in with a girl that has a Bengal. It's very vocal and makes strange sounds. [IMG]

Absolutely beautiful coat. What kind of sounds? I had a friend whose bird made spaceship noises, it was awesome. It would just sit in the corner sounding like an episode of Star Trek.

My cat's actually pretty vocal as well, but and she's just a black American Shorthair. Stark contrast to the cat I grew up with, also a black American Shorthair, who my family literally thought was mute until she was about 6 years old.

Love the Bengal - looks friendly enough, nice coat.

We have two cats from different litters but the same mother. Both are black as night with a crook in their tail, and could not be more different. Jack is the quiet stalker kitty, while Jill will talk your ears off. In catspeak, of course.

I always worry when I see this topic pop up. I don't want to hear about anyone's cat going to heaven.

I really think I may need to smuggle a cat in here.

The Bengal would make hollow howling sounds, it would also hiss very often. It had a very active, energetic personality.

Yikes. Sounds like something in a Poe story.
