Apparently, my teeth aren't as good as I'd thought. My regular dentist has been recommending braces to correct a few minor problems that he thinks will get worse over time.

A dentist friend recommended this DNA Appliance thing over braces, but I'm a little skeptical since it doesn't seem very common. It supposedly widens one's jaw/mouth by a retainer used every night for about a year. It doesn't force the teeth in place but stimulates the jaw to widen naturally. Seems a little hokey and the website doesn't give me complete confidence.

But I do like the thought of using it just at night vs braces round the clock. And it's supposed to help with clearing the sinuses. This is what I was told: widening one's jaw lowers the roof of one's mouth, thus lowering the floor of one's sinuses and promoting less sinus congestion and better breathing. I actually have pretty bad, chronic sinus trouble. So that would be a big plus to me.

Anyone have any experience w/ it? Any dentists in the house? This is not the kind of thing I'd usually ask about here, but you never know… Thanks in advance.

No. You're smarter than that. A clear aligner system (e.g. Invisalign) or a lingual bracket system (e.g. Incognito) would be a much wiser choice.
