OK, I'm not sure what's going on but the entire document should be at 300dpi and when you place the text in it should (automatically) be at 300dpi. In other words, if you have a document at 300dpi and place 100dpi text in it and "stretch" it, this will not come out good. I'm not sure if I'm understanding or making sense

yeah, what you say kinda makes sense to me.

When I was using photoshop I set the resolution to 300 dpi when I first created a new doc. With publisher I cant find a resolution setting, but I can check the resolution of my images. So I know that the images that I have embedded are around 300, but I dont know about the doc as a whole or the text thats in it.

So I am guessing that at the moment the pictures will print fine, but I am worried about the text....

I had used the photoshop trial before, so cant dl again. I'm not really interested in dropping hundereds for this at the mo, so not wanting to splash out on expensive Adobe

You can usually change the resolution under File (or Page) Setup (or Properties). I'm only familiar with PhotoImpact so I can't really help you out with Publisher. I sent you a PM.

I think InDesign is the appropriate tool for what you're looking for, namely layout. Perhaps search for a cheaper alternative to InDesign? Though I guess Publisher is along the same category of software as InDesign.

Illustrator is suitable for vector drawing, and photoshop is for photo manipulation.

As for fonts, there isn't really a "DPI" to them, as you convert them to vectors/outlines when you create them for print.
