It is just utterly bizarre to me that Amazon bought Whole Food's, which has such a strong brand halo, and at the same time are just turning themselves into Ebay

It’s worth reading the recent profile of Bezos in The Atlantic.

What is your takeaway from that profile @smittycl ?
Man with a plan and a space/humanity’s future obsession. Driven to expand so Amazon will keep growing and absorbing. Doesn’t seem overly evil, at least not yet.

Had a boss who did that in a previous job. When corporate caught on, he gave us this whole speech about how when "it's on the truck" it's fine to book the revenue right away because you know you'll be getting it. We learned literally on the first day of accounting class in college that you're not allowed to do that. He had been a CPA previously. ?

I don’t buy much on eBay anymore but noticed this when it popped up. Can’t imagine who would have bought this at retail.

Spent the afternoon in Georgetown on this cool, sunny day.

Sid Mashburn - always a great experience. Grabbed some new dress gloves and checked out their seasonal flannel shirts. Amazing cashmere navy sport coat but I don’t quite need it and it’s a bit pricey. Not outrageous but hard to justify as an impulse buy. Need to think about this one. Same with EG Piccadilly loafers. Sigh. This is one store that I’m not interested in the makers anymore. All of sufficient quality, nothing to worry about.

Ralph Lauren - it’s really just all Polo, no Purple Label. Suits and sport coats with nice fabric were made in Italy but had RL tags, no idea who makes them. Tweedy stuff was itchy and awful, made in Portugal. Was hoping to see some made in USA Hickey Freeman but no joy. Is that really a thing? Have to hit the RL store at Tyson’s for the nice stuff.

Billy Reid - excellent sport shirts and such. Love this place. Grabbed a scarf and cotton henley. Wifey almost grabbed amazing suede coat but wants to think about it. Some pretty amazing men’s coats but I’m outerwear saturated.

Okay, maybe time to call shenanigans, or just straight bullshit, on the Ralph Lauren-Hickey Freeman thing. Seems like RL had HF do the blazers for the last Olympics. Nice move, I liked it. After visiting my local RL store (it’s a Ralph Lauren store but carries only Polo as calling it Polo is too outlet? It is in Georgetown I guess...)

Anyway, was just looking through RL website and see no suits or sport coats made in USA which might indicate HF. Lots of “tailored in Italy,” “crafted in Italy” (whatever the hell that means), “crafted with Italian fabric” and such. Lower end stuff listed as Made in Portugal or “Imported” which is of course a placeholder for Made in China or other Asian countries. Not a comment on that, just looking for HF. Weasel-words seem to predominate. I see some really awful RRL items made in USA. Western-themed tux stuff?

Am I missing something obvious? Any help out there? Still looking here.

EDIT: interesting to see TR Pescod, the Attolini and BB model, now on RL apparently.

Visited Georgetown for the first time this summer. Nice area with some beautiful old houses, although the main drag mostly had crap mall stores and too crowded to enjoyably walk through. Some of the side ones, like the one Ralph is on, had more charm. Although when I walked in I was also a little weirded out by the amount of polo compared to everything else.

Georgetown has a lot of Mall stores you can find anywhere. Sid Mashburn, Billy Reid, and Barbour are unique to this region and also my favorite stops.

:( He's 18 years too late. There use to be some awesome shops on the main strip.
