Thanks that's really helpful. Hard to get ideas. I can flip through Harper's Bazaar but can't afford half the stuff on the ads.

A lot of women have a holy grail like search or craving for chanel or hopefully not LV. If this is somebody important and with you for the Long haul. I wouldn’t compromise if it’s within reach. Usually there are a lot of clues.

That being said. The LV stuff that falls into the same prices as chanel category can be very alluring if the monogram canvas ranges are ignored.

Oh... there are baby grails and the holy grail... save your way up. That grail is inevitable. It also will take some time to come even if you do manage to afford it

I'm lucky. My wife just uses two bags: a small, old, made in the US, Coach crossbody and a leather tote that I bought for her at a Florence street vender for under $100. She has no interest in expensive bags (although she does like the LP Bellevue design). She kind of wants a bag from Cuyana. I haven't seen their stuff in person, but I like the designs too, and the price is about the same as AE shoes -- way lower than Celine.

Kate Spade seems like an AE equivalent. Nice but not unobtainable and still seems somewhat respectable.

that's not quite that bad, but if you want "check list", start with LV tote, Chanel quilted bag (not cheap anymore), some version of recent Prada/Celine, none of these is going to kill, then wait until the day she wants her Hermes Birkin...

If you’re budget reaches ~$2,000 you’re in range of a custom bag from April in Paris, and she has ready made for less. You could not ask for a finer handbag.

^Good point. There are a few makers that use full grain leather but are less than AiP (more than Cuyana or Kate Spade though). Frank Clegg would be one familiar to many on the CM side:

Interesting read in WWD with an interview with Tom Ford. It's paywalled so I'll pull a few quotes.

Basically, near term for luxury is fucked until things open up and people can get on with their glamorous lives. Strategy for brands now is about survival until those times. Long term, people will do what they've always done and look to adorn themselves.

May be an ignorant question, but I have no idea how the higher end fashion brands operate. Do they release all the items they do for a season at once? Beyond a traditional Spring and Fall collection how many cycles a year do the brands actually go through?

I'm used to Japanese brands that have regular SS and A/W collections, but items are released weekly a little at a time, so a given season can actually be several months of releases.

It’s usually 4 main releases, but those releases are stocked through separate deliveries. It’s not really on purpose, and not a scheduled “drop” system. It just depends on when manufacturing is ready and sometimes things like heavy coats will naturally be released later in the FW season

Cuyana stuff looks nice. My dentist is right above one of their shops so I stop in every once in a while. What makes exactly zero sense to me is how they've raised $31.7M in venture funding...
