In apparel, definitely trailing the market, with Kering reporting big drops in Gucci YoY. i'm nor that excited about Asics or Adidas, which seem to be faddish and following single shoes - the tiger and the Samba, and both brands are always hot every once in a while before cooling heavily, though I suppose that Adidas is never super uncool.

Who buys Uggs or Birkenstocks on StockX? I have multiple pairs of Ugg Tasmans that I wear as winter house shoes, and just switched to a new pair of Birkenstock Bostons, and the only limited edition I regret missing is the Kith Londons from earlier this year, but... who buys anything else that you can't get retail or under in either brand?

So annoying that Onitsuka Tiger pulled their brand from the USA. Stores were shuttered and website stopped selling online in the US.

Sounds like this bill would end the policy of duty free imports into the US under $800 for apparel and textiles. All thanks to Shein.

While I hate it as consumer, I'm guessing that US retailers are rightfully sighing in relief. Also honestly a lot better for the environment.

Hopefully there is some nuance to the legislation, though I suspect not. Even though I would miss not being able to bring in de minimis shoes from UK, the harms of the current regime far outweigh the benefits.

As a supplier who brings in goods legally, pays tariffs, pays to be able to track the inputs of all my cotton and linen, pays to prove that I'm not using factories in restricted regions, and has to deal with massively increased inspections at the ports (which I always pass, but **** up my delivery timelines), I would be thrilled to see an actually hammer dropped on Shein and Temu.

Its a lark that US owned businesses are paying tariffs and paying to comply while China owned interests are producing with forced labor with dirty cotton and paying nothing.

So it's supposed to protect domestic manufacturers. How much of a price difference is there for let's say a hoodie from Temu/Shein compared to one that was made in the US? If the price and the added cost of importing that hoodie from Shein still ends up being significantly cheaper to the buyer, that's not going to stop anything. The worst thing I can see coming out of this is creating a huge backlog of packages waiting to be assessed and released especially within the USPS system.

first off , microeconomics 101 : the tariff will either raise costs for the producer , the consumer , or both . in this case what could the price elasticity of demand possibly be for cheapo fashion ? i'd bet those consumers are pretty sensitive , it seems to be the overriding appeal of she in and tee mu that they are dirty cheap .

and so getting rid of de minimis could well reduce the volume of dumping ( which is exactly what those companies are doing ) and it should make it more costly for those producers to engage in that kind of biz as I should think they will bear the incidence of the tariff . we will see to what extent it changes the production equation .

and yes as folks here point out it will raise the prices of other products but the higher value goods will be less affected and after $800 there wouldn't be a difference at all . to me the point is to mitigate the malignance of super cheap and super low value imports in our domestic markets .

Nordstrom wants to go private. Good move?

"Nordstrom founding family has offered to take the department store chain private for $23 a share, teaming up with a Mexico-based retailer in its latest bid, a filing showed on Wednesday.

That price would value the company at roughly $3.76 billion. Its shares have gained 35% since Reuters first reported in March that the family showed interest in taking Nordstrom private.

Nordstrom’s sales have been stronger of late than some of its peers such as Macy’s and Kohl’s as it focuses on stocking its shelves with trendier products.

The bidders include CEO Erik Nordstrom, President Peter Nordstrom and Mexican retailer El Puerto de Liverpool, who sent a non-binding letter proposing to form a new entity that would buy the chain, according to the filing."
