He was, under the same name he uses on his own forum, I think "Faust". I find that his points are often buried under a pile of intellectual claptrap and negativity. And while I like a lot of the designers discussed on his Stylezeitgeist, I find that a lot of the posters suffer from a lack of true humor and self-aggrandizement. Some of them remind me of the emo kid who thought that he was more intellectual than all of his peers in high school, but really, just listened to The Smiths and wears a lot of black and probably ought to do some exercise to lift their mood.

I couldn't agree more. As much as there is so much wealth of information there in that fashion niche, it's just not fun there. He is the biggest contributor there obviously but I also feel he's killing his own forum. If I'm comparing his interaction with members there to @LA Guy 's interaction here (they're both the head honchos in their respective fora), I feel he'd ban you immediately for the smallest of remarks (obviously, outside of blatantly rude, asshole ones). I'm more at ease sharing my ideas here than over there.

I spent more time learning about CCP there and to which he claims his platform put CCP on the map (maybe true, maybe not). I don't know the real reason he started disliking CCP but as the members were having fun there discussing his stuff, he'd jump in just to crap on it.

Anyone check out the Hudson Yards mall? Is the future of mall retailing or just hype?

I hope it is something special, but I won't be surprised if it is just a lot of chrome, glass, marble and the same international brands that you see in every other major city in the world.

Banning people who disagree with you, at sometimes, makes no sense. No two informed and intelligent persons will agree on all things, so I'd have to ban everyone who has something worthwhile to say, and... jet.

I draw a very obvious distinction between my personal and non privileged posting, and my admin/mod voice.

Thought it’s same as downtown just not underground, will check it out when less people are around...

You did ban someone for using the word "ch_naman"
Which seemed a little personal

But generally I think you're very tolerant and fair

You seriously think that’s personal (Chinam_n)?

PS maybe there is a case if you didn’t spend significant time in the US?

I often agree with Eugene's views, but man ... every time I read him, it's like, do you like anything? Except for a few SZ articles and his RO interview, everything he writes is about how the world is falling apart and it's all doom and gloom and everyone is so stupid. Wish he would spend more time talking about stuff he loves instead of stuff he hates.

Also, speaking of hate, 99% of articles that use the phrase "late capitalism" are kind of dumb. Getting paid to use the phrase "late capitalism" to pseudo-intellectually dress up "this is stupid" is itself a kind of late capitalist production.

I'm not aware of having read anything else he's written, but this piece was pretty much Sociology of Consumption 101, i.e. pretty much spot on but hardly new or complicated. I can't see that it was overly negative, certainly critical - but then it was critical about things that are obviously crying out for criticism.

I also wouldn't know if he's 'pseudo-intellectual' - he doesn't seem so on this reading, simply someone who isn't afraid to show that he's actually read some books, but I do know that with the USA's general anti-intellectualism, that's a pretty safe kind of insult and plays well to the crowd - but a bit weird coming from someone who runs a website which doesn't hide its intelligence either.

Personally, I don't use the term 'late capitalism', because it seems presumptuous or overly hopeful (depending on your politics): capitalism doesn't seem to be going anywhere, just mutating. It's actually quite hard to describe capitalism in a single particular way right now because there are so many forms and strategies at play: neoliberal capitalism, consumer capitalism, affective capitalism, platform capitalism, information capitalism, surveillance capitalism etc. etc... they are all good descriptions to some extent but all partial.

All racial slurs get a timeout at least, and a ban for repeat or habitual offenders. That's not a new rule. It's probably our oldest rule. Some people like to argue that such and such a term is not a slur, but if it's generally considered a slur in the US, it is. I watched Ricky Gervais's "After Life", a British miniseries, and it was even considered a slur there, albeit a more mild one than some others, thus the ability to joke about it, but I take that as evidence that it's widely considered a slur in the English speaking world.

I was going to say this is inspired by developments in some SE Asian cities. Omotesando Hills is probably the one that comes to mind that feels most comparable (luxury shopping, Michelin-star dining, next to everyday shopping).
