IIRC the RLPL are self-tipped (CORRECTION - just checked, they're not. At least, not always) whereas Polo are not. Also, the PL silk can be a bit nicer than the Polo. Also, the widths/lengths can vary a bit.

Whether these details are worth the price differential is up to you.

+1,I'd go with Polo ties as well,I have a few Polo ties, they are different from PL but quality is not bad. Also,I would only buy PL suits and shoes, all other items from PL line don't impress me.

Should I buy now? Think RL will drop the prices a little more?

I think they're decent ties--nowhere near the best I own, but on par with Altea, for example. I've found a couple of purple label ties at Marshalls for under $10; at that price, they were certainly worth it.

The distinctions between Purple Label and regular line Polo when it comes to ties are not clear to me either. I've always been very happy with the Polo ties that I get for $20 at the outlets, which retail for around $95.

the other things that's puzzling is the difference between the RLPL pocketsquares and the mainline Polo pocketsquares.

i have polo/blue, black label and purple label and the difference between the 3 is minimal. I would say my purple label is the nicest, but not by much.

the main difference between blue/polo and black label ties are the width, usually 3.5" vs 3" respectively. otherwise they look they are made at the same factory and many times from the same silks.

in summation the main differences are in styling rather than construction or quality (with the exception of rlpl 7 folds)

Same tie in-store was $39.99 - 30% more.

I own that particular Purple label tie, and have very similar polo ties.

The purple label i would characterize as having more heft, its a thicker tie and ties a slightly bigger knot, i really enjoy the tie and consider it very well made and high quality, equal in quality to the Brioni Satin ties i've worn.

The polo tie is very high quality, and that particular St. James pindot is much nicer in person then on the website, it ties a smaller knot.

Between the two, it would depend on what i planned to wear it with, and i'd lean towards the Polo tie.

The pattern on the Polo is tighter then that on the Purple label, and the Purple label tie has cream colored dots (not white). Where the Polo is most likely white.

Padding as far as I can tell. That very RLPL Tie is on sale for £27 at my local store.
