Did you ever lose a co-worker that is a close friend through layoffs?

Times are tough and it's even tougher when a co-worker that has become a really close friend is laid off. Has anyone experienced this? It just happened to me and I have to say it's one of the worst feelings I had I whole life. You work with person for years, day in day out and probably spend more time with this person then your friends outside of work. The thing is that the only time both of us even have is at work. And poof, all of a sudden, the person that you chill with the most for lunch or what not is now not there anymore. How does one cope with the withdrawal phrase?

Similarly, I had a very good friend who was a visiting professor where I was an assistant prof. By its nature, that's a temp position, so after two years she was gone. Sad. But life goes on. Still miss her a bit.

This has happened to me - started with one guy getting laid off and getting a job in a nearby city. His new employers had more interesting contracts and a better compensation package. As we were a very close working group we stayed in touch and in the next 18 months 4 more of us jumped to the other company.
