And here I thought he got the burns on his arms from moving a hot urn during his monk training.

I think Mr. Wilkinson is right on the money on this. If you pay attention to that you are doing, rarely does knife accidents happen. But hey, it's part of the deal... everyone cuts themselves, it happens! But a knife skills class is definitely a good idea to anyone who aspires to cook.

Yes! Knife accidents really happen only when a person isn't paying attention and/or careless. If someone gets into accidents too often, then that person basically needs to learn skills or be less careless.

My life revolves around doing something half-assed.

In all seriousness, I agree. I'll hold off on the mandolin for awhile though. In the near future, I will need to keep my focus on the smoker.

It was, obviously, never supposed to go into the dish pit. Wash it by hand, place it back. Well, one day some dipshit decides to put it in the dish pit. In a rush to get something washed, I reach into the sink to grab something and slide my right index finger against all 5 blades. It was crazy. Would NOT stop bleeding. Had to go to the hospital and get 28 stitches, all in the final section of my index finger. You can still see five distinct scars where the blades cut me, and I have not had feeling in that finger since the day it happened.

Another time I was using a meat slicer illegally (supposed to be 18 before you use one) to slice something at a pizza place I worked at. Finished my cutting, unplugged it, took the blade guard off to clean the blade, hand slipped, big cut straight in my left palm. The entire width of my hand, straight across. No stitches that time, but it was a bloody mess and took a long time to heal.

That's about it for bad cuts. Bad burns have been much, much worse. And I still have scars all over both arms from several burns I've suffered over the years.

I was hoping for the story about your lost testicle.

I'm guessing it's because it didn't happen while prepping ingredients in a kitchen.

I know, which makes it a lot less thrilling.

Once I was trying to slice a frozen bagel by holding it in the palm of my left hand while cutting with the right hand. Needless to say I didn't end up eating the bagel - by the time I got home from the hospital it was time for dinner!

Nope. But, in HS, I was up at 2 AM for some reason and wanted a pizza, so I threw one in the oven. Fell asleep, the timer went off and woke me up. I went over to the oven all groggy like and grabbed the pizza out. Pulled out the pizza cutter and in my half-sleep dropped it. I was wearing boxers and a wifebeater, so not much protection. It did nip the edge of my sack and draw blood. Was some scary ****.

...and that's why Kyle decided to go into cooking -- so he could amass a dunlop to shield his ******** and make pizzas that require more alertness and dexterity.

I'm such an emo ***** that instead of only weeping while peeling onions, I cut myself.

I almost sliced my thumb off at the first joint as a kid. The cut went right through the skin to the bone and was a bit over half an inch long. The scar is still clearly visible. It didn't occur prepping food in the kitchen though. I got wendy's afterwards so it was all worth it. This was before wendy's was a huge chain.

actually fat people don`t chew. Their tendency is to swallow food without chewing (tasting) much

I am not sure, but I don`t think it`s ideal to use regular knives for lettuce.

You`re right that sharper knives are better for cutting yourself though

A trick some chefs and my wife uses sometimes after cutting themselves is to use super glue. The cut healing is quick and the scar is clean.
