Did these boots leather dry up?

Recently i got a good deal on some Cordwainer (spanish gyw brand) goodyear boots with shearling lining, perfect for the cold months here.
After about 10 times use i used saphir creme on them and the leather got all veiny, and on the cap toe its like an pumped up vein on your forehead.

I cant say the saphir caused it 100 percent but i hadnt noticed it until afterwards.

Leather hasnt felt or looked dry before, what can have caused this? I have used them on icy and snowy pavements etc, but nothing excessive. And no other boots have had this kind of problem. The problem is on both boots, and in approx the same spot on each boot. Did i just get unlucky?

Those shoes are not waterproof. First hand experience
