Diamond point bow ties
How does the general rule about bow ties not being wider than your collar / face apply to diamond point bows?

Is it okay if the points go out further like here: http://www.stangeberlin-onlineshop.d...ce30757009.jpg

...Or in the third picture down here: http://thecordialchurchman-blog.com/...point-bow-tie/

?

I'm assuming it's fine as long as the main part of the bow not including the points is within the boundaries of your collar/face, as otherwise diamond points would have to be pretty small on the whole.

Thanks!

Okay, so the best way to avoid this problem is just to avoid diamond point bows altogether?

I think you are overthinking this. IMHO those bowties are not bad. If you are uncomfortable about the points of the bow exceeding the width of the collar, then just adjust the length of the bowtie and tie a knot with a narrower span (I'm assuming your bowties are adjustable.) I think diamond point bowties are cool, you should rock them.

Blackbowtie: Actually, it's not adjustable, but if I tie it so the points don't stick out so far, it doesn't look as big anymore. I'll take your advice and just go ahead and wear a diamond point while not really thinking about the fact that I'm wearing one.

Sorry, I know this reply is late.

A diamond point bow-tie is a great look for dress down.

Think Scottish golfer or old-style adventurer.
For formal occasions, not so good.
If you are wearing a suit, I'd say wear a square bow-tie.
If you are wearing a sports coat and slacks, probably ok.
If the sports coat is tweed, oh hell yes!

You've definitely pinpointed my two favourite dress down looks...

Totally agreed with this....

With regards to the "pointyness" of the diamond shape, image it being a scale from formal to casual - the more pointy, the more casual as a general guideline.
Also depends on the fabric and pattern though of course.....
