How can I tell if a suit is fused? I'm thinking of splurging on a power suit that will really last, so I want to be extra careful when I buy. Also, are there any specific warning signs I should look for when buying a suit?

You could post the manufacturer here and people would be able to give you details, but the easiest way is to feel the lapels and chest, if it is canvassed you should be able to feel the rough canvas interlining in between the layers of cloth, while a fused construction will typically move in between your fingers pretty easily.

The way I do it is to pinch the outer fabric of the lapels and chest between two fingers and rub it together, then pinch the sleeve fabric (without pinching the lining) and rub that together to compare the thickness and feel of it. If they are not the same, the part of the suit where the fabric is thicker has a fused interlining. For the lapels it's easy, just pinch the whole lapel and rub back and forth. Like drizzt said if it is smooth it's probably fused.

You will need to feel the fabric. Unfused fabric always feel rough and not rubbable when you try to rub together.

There is a great length of discussion on this forum on this subject, please use search for it.

I would suggest using going to a store and using J's method to compare a jacket you know is canvassed (Oxxford, Isaia, Canali, etc.) with one you know is fused (wide variety of cheap suits). The difference should be pretty apparent. I find the rubbing/roughness test more difficult due to the varying textures of fabric and weight of the fusing in different jackets. Using J's method eliminates those variables.

Starship Troopers was written in 1959, but then again I'm not sure that's what Heinlein called the robotic getups they wore anyway.

Forgive my ignorance, but who exactly is/was Fioravanti?

    edit- corrected date.
