Searched extensively through forums but didn't find much re: these denim specialists in NYC. Looking to shorten some selvedge and Denim Therapy and Denim Surgeon are real close by. Obviously, just a hem as opposed to substantial repair but still would like it done correctly. Can anyone make a recommendation or share experiences with any of them? Also, what is the best way to shorten ie chain stitch? original hem? wash first?

Always wash first. Assuming sanforized, you're going to get about 0.5-0.75" shrinkage in the length, maybe up to 1" if you machine dry as well. I've never shortened denim (prefer to stack) but I have a pair that had a crotch repair done by Denim Therapy and it's nice work, can't even tell from the outside (Naked and Famous Slim Guy Deep Indigo):

All my jeans have shrunk in length after every wash. Even after you get the initial shrinkage out, I would hem at least an inch longer than you want them to be after a few washes.

That repair looks good. How much did they charge?

I do most of the repairs at Self Edge NY, feel free to ask me any questions about our services. And as for hemming, we prefer to cut the jean to length and make a new hem on our union special 43200g chainstitch machine.... original hems look sloppy once you look inside the jean cuff. If you're wearing the jean often you'll get nice roping and fading at the hem pretty quickly.

I actually have no idea because I bought them second hand from someone who had it done. The Denim Therapy repair was mentioned in the sale ad, and the jeans were shipped to me in the Denim Therapy box

Any current thoughts on Denim Therapy vs. Denim Surgeon? Both have good Yelp reviews. Denim Therapy has gotten a lot more press. Finally had both pockets give out and the crotch is probably about to blow as well.
