Denim 101 for Men's Clothing

This denim sizing, actually all sizing, is crazy. I'm 5-10 and 199

and wear a size 36 in most jeans/pants. After reading on here I measured my waist, at least lower waist where I wear my pants and I'm 40.5". I also measure my jeans and they are 19" which would make them 38's, but I wear 36 comfortably.

Wouldn't mind getting some raw denim but one, the sizes are so odd and it appears most high end jeans only come in one long length. Not really interested in paying $150+ and then having to get them hemmed or having to walk around with them rolled up or stacked. Why is it again they don't make varying lengths?

I am 5-10 190 and wear a 36 dress pants, 34 for j crew or other vanity sized pants. I bought a size 34x30 "RRL Low straight" and although they were tight at first (maybe 7-10 wears) now they're great. You might want to check that out. In my experience, the waist in jeans tend to stretch to the optimal size as long ad you get it approximately right.

Just trust me, Get Baldwins in 34 and wear them a lot. Trust me. After a month you will be so glad you did. Trust me.

You should pick up a pair of RRL. Jean Shop did a cream that was almost speckled and slubby. Think Rogue Territory is using something similar now.

The Jean Shop one's were nice, but I remember the Rby45RPMs, and that denim is amazing. The Nom de Guerre's are decent as well, but really not on the same level.

If anyone is wanting to try out some good jeans for relatively cheap, Mr. Porter has Jean Shop and R13 at about 1/2 off. I like both. R13 is more of a "fashion" jean, and Jean Shop has a more traditional look. If you get the Jean Shops, be sure to size down unless you like your jeans falling down loose. The rinsed jeans are tighter, but they will stretch out rapidly, though if you get the "skinny" fit, you could probably do okay with your regular jean size if you prefer a looser fit through the seat (which I do). In the rigid denim, however, you will need to size down at least 2. Put it this way. I usually buy size 90 dress belts and size 85 or 90 jeans belts (which are more forgiving), and I wear a 30 in Jean Shop rigid skinny fits (which are more like a pretty standard slim fit,) and an XS in Jean Shop belts. Sort of crazy.

The NdG and Spurr are nicely cut and made, but the 45RPM Sorahiko's denim is in another league.

I'll check out RRL and Jean Shop...not that I need more nice denim.

FYI, I still wear the 5EPxSF most often.

^ have you tried KMW ? They're by far my favorite jeans. I like my Jean Shop as well but the cut doesn't work as well for me as the KMW Rocker

I have a pair of MIJ KMW 1980s that I wear almost as much as the 5EPs.

hey everyone, newbie here. finished school and landed a job. time to upgrade the wardrobe.

was wondering if the forum could give some recommendations as I have always had difficulty finding jeans.

Through college I pretty much wore 510s/511s exclusively. Although generally the 510s would fit too tight and the 511s would be slightly baggy for my taste. Skinny jeans are really the ONLY jeans that I like aesthetically, although at 5'10" 170lbs cheap mondays, etc. are usually too tight. Predicament for sure. I did have a pair of lucky superslim once which were great but they fell apart and lucky discontinued the model.

Suggestions on where to look? Would prefer to spend $100-150 but would spend up to $200 if they were perfect.

edit: maybe they don't HAVE to be skinny, but i just hate the feeling of unnecessary material moving around near my ankles...maybe that sensation is just a symptom of a poorly designed shape/cut

I have a running back/athletic build. Often the waist is fine but the thighs don't work. Now I bought a 34L 34W, and the thighs were so tight it almost looked like spandex. The waist was a little snug. Is it uncommon to size up [COLOR=FF00AA]two[/COLOR] sizes for Diesel?

I dont' want supberbaggy, but also I don't like the, well, nuthugging look, I'm somewhat trying to thread a needle here. What has worked:

Seven Standard (98% cotton, 2% spandex). In 34W Those fit perfect.

Levi Skinner/Hesher have worked too in a 36W, but had to get the waist taken in at some point as it widened.

I typically wear 34W and Medium garmets. Sometimes I'll go up to 36W, like the ultra-slim Calvin Klein dress pants, those I get in 36.

Bottom line:

Given how tight the 34Ws were, should I just go for the 38, and take in the waist, or is sizing one up to 36W good enough?

Also curious how reliable how reliable mall brands are. Gap, HM and Guess. For wearing once or twice a week, and that can be dressed up or dressed down.

wrt to diesel's for wide thighs, i find the viker model to work out great, true to size . . . there's also the larkees that are a more loose fit . . .
