Dell Vostro Laptop Support Experiences?

I need a new laptop for 99% home use to replace my 5 year old Averatec, and Dell is having a sale on their Vostro 1510 laptop.

The specs are fairly good for the price, but I am most worried about the service support from Dell. my friend has a XPS 1550 with a defective HDD, and he's been having a nightmare of a time trying to get a repair/replacement.

Apparently the Vostro has better support than their regular consumer line as it is geared towards business.

Anybody have any experience with them or recommendations?

Dell closed down their major North American customer service centre (located in Ontario, iirc) about a year ago. Prepare to repeat yourself a lot to Indian support techs.

The same thing can be said about any major computer manufacturer.

In any case, I've never owned a Dell. Thinkpads FTW!

Yeah there's also a deal on a faux-thinkpad (SL line) for a few bucks more than the Vostro I was thinking about; iffy on that being a 'faux-thinkpad' and not the real ones like the R series.

I don't know much about the SL line, but if you're patient, there're always deals on Thinkpads. Just a day or two ago, there was a deal on the X61s series--nicely equipped for under $600. But they're probably too small for general use.

Ohwell my Averatec is still hanging on by one working hinge, I can hold out for awhile.
