The term is used fairly frequently on these fora. What is your definition of an authentic big timer, and who rocks it?.....big timers, pseudo big timers, even the (345k/yr, purple label, doorman joker) please chime in.

IMO, rocking it is a state of mind. Unfortunately the more you learn here, the more you realize what a pretender you are.

The only ones who think they rock it are the ones who are ignorant about good clothes.

Unfortunately this is true for a lot more about life than a wardrobe. Ignorance is bliss, how true.

Having lived in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for four years, I have seen a glimpse into the lives of real "big-timers", including:

- private oval track, for putting your collection of vintage Ferraris and British convertibles (MG, Austin Healey, etc.) through their paces;

- flying to Bahrain for a few beers whenever the mood takes you;

- a menagerie of Arabian oryx, lions, etc. in a private game park in your backyard.

Of course, there are the inevitable shopping trips to Europe and the Far East, where six-figure expenditures on clothing and jewelery are common. However, as the old adage goes, money doesn't buy taste.

What's the point of owning an Oryx? One of the points of western business attire is how democratic it is supposed to be and how if done smartly, it displays the values, qualities and tastes of the wearer which more likely than not trump wealth or ostentation.

And if one has been to the Gulf, this same adage would hold true in their national dress.
