It isn't the rutting period where you live is it? Bucks can act strangely/aggressively then. Could it have seen it's reflection in one of your windows and thought it was another buck?
Bucks have come and stared at me in the field at my mothers house during the rut. I believe they very occasionally kill people. I don't think calling the police was a bad move, I am a little surprised the guy shot it with a handgun instead of getting an expert in to deal with it.

On one occasion a buck absolutely fixated on my little brother and I and kept getting closer. It got so close I shoved my brother up a tree and started wondering if the small hatchet I had to hand would be enough to drive it off if it attacked us. Shouting a lot and banging things didn't frighten it at all. Fortunately my dog chose that moment to come back from whatever he was doing, he charged at the buck barking aggressively which is pretty unusual for him (he is a very cheerful golden retriever and befriends most wildlife he meets) and drove it away.

so we kill animals when they are hostile when humans enter their environment, but we also kill them when they do nothing to bother us and show no sign of hostility whatsoever? even after being provoked? what a fucking joke. OP you're a real piece of work.

I didn't shoot him, the cop shot him. I asked the cop to shoot him with a tranquilizer. he said procedure is to put animals down in those circumstances. Why are you giving ME shit? I thought the animal was sick and needed help.

if you thought it was sick, why not call animal control?

My thought on reading this thread was that the buck was very possibly rabid. That is certainly very atypical behavior for a deer.

I do think it was bad form on the cop's part to pop the deer with his service pistol and then let it run off to die a lingering death. At least he could have made an effort to follow the blood trail and finish the animal off and have his carcass examined for disease. As others have suggested, if the buck was diseased, leaving its body in the woods to be consumed by scavenging animals and birds and possibly spreading disease was a bad business.

Or just emptied the entire clip into it so it couldn't get away while screaming at the top of his lungs.

That's the kinda' messed-up part. I've no problem with shooting deer, but at least make it a clean kill.

no one answered so I called the police to ask them to send an animal control officer. they said they didn't have one and regular cops respond to these situations. cop shows up and says the deer has to be put down. I think your righteous indignation is misplaced.
