Decline in Filson?

I just ordered a new 258 in the brown color (which, BTW, I really like - tan seemed to get too stained and I never warmed to the green color bags). However, the hand carry straps seem much thinner and less substantial than on previous Filson bags I have owned. Oddly, the rear carry strap is thicker than the front one which is noticeably thinner and feels much less substantial. Even the leather side pieces that the shoulder strap attaches to seem thinner and less substantial than on prior bags. Am I nuts? Has anyone else gotten a new bag recently and found this to be the case? Just wondering if Filson has begun cutting some corners, which would be quite disappointing. Don't get me wrong, I think the overall quality of the bag is fine and will hold up ok but there does seem to be a noticeable difference....

I own 3, about to be 4, Filson pieces and the leather is pretty much exactly the same thickness on every piece. But your post does concern me.

Is there anyway you can post of photos of what you are talking about, if the thickness of the leather is as you described, a side by side picture would better prove your point. I don't know, maybe the brown bags are made slightly differently since they're new? Or maybe it's just that one piece you got?

My guess is they are matching the weight of their bridle leathers to specific items now. There is no point in having the same weight leather for a bag that would typically be loaded with 7 pounds of stuff versus a huge duffel that you could load a hundred pounds of gear in. I took a look at my Outfitter bag's leather and there is noticeable variations in thickness of the different pieces that make up the straps etc. All in all the leather is more than adequate for the fifty pounds of junk I typically load in it which is all that really matters.

Thanks - that makes sense, I suppose. I thought it was odd that there was variance in the thicknesses which I had never noticed on the older bags.

I ordered a Filson garment bag in December, and one of the leather pieces of the strap had a defect. I e-mailed Crane's (from whom I bought it) but have yet to hear back (doubtless the Xmas rush has them behind in their e-mailing.) Other than that, the leather seemed fine.

Let me explain... A bunch of greedy executives came up with the idea of whoring out this brand for the sake of a few dollars.

Now the items are made in places far far from Seattle, probably in well lit friendly environments by skilled workers... (not sure about that)...

The bottom line is this:

Luggage and the old line products are made in Seattle. The new lines are made in the same plants as Ralph Lauren.

Just a FYI, if you ordered any Filson items this weekend from us and we have to order it from Filson.... there might be a delay. They are mad because we are "undercutting the Filson brand and causeing turmoil with the dealer base." They are holding our orders because of this. I have explained my displeasure in this, but as a little guy, I am beholden to the powers that be.

Does this affect the oil twill duffle series? I don't want to order if that's the case.

Excuse the off-topic question, but how much would it cost to ship a 240 (small carry-on) to the UK?

Filson has released our orders and so if we had to order your product, there will be about a 5 to 6 day delay than what we promised. My apologies to all affected, but unless we have contacted you otherwise, you will get your products by Christmas. We appreciate all of our StyleForum customers.
