Decline in Borrelli Suit Quality

Recently purchased a Borrelli suit off of Yoox as it was only $350 after all of the discounts and savings. Upon receipt I noticed a few things:

Buttons are not sewn on using crows foot stitching

Half canvassed jacket

Pick stitching is only present around the lapel, pockets and top portion of shoulder.

This suit is almost incomparable to my older Borrelli suit, the quality is just not there.

Has anyone else noticed this? Could it be a lower tiered suit from Borrelli that yoox is selling? I was only aware of the luxury vintage, mainline Luigi Borrelli (what this suit is tagged as), and royal collection.

It looks like Borrelli is now made by Eleventy (or whoever does their tailoring). Nothing special.

I don't know much about Borrelli, but sometimes bespoke tailors will do a half canvassed construction depending on how the jacket is supposed to fit and feel. I have some bespoke Italian jackets that are half-canvassed and meant to be worn in the summer.

AFAIK, crow's foot stitching can be done on a machine. I'm not sure it's a mark of quality. Similarly, pick stitching is a design point.

I would focus more on how the jacket looks on you and less on these proxy variables for quality.

Disagree. Would be a bargain if it was old Borrelli. They must be trying a new business model focusing on midrange tailoring.

I think all the Neapolitans are going that way. They have realized their brands have value, and they are exploiting them as much as possible. Isiaa are now a global brand; Borrelli are all over Yoox; Attolini has their CA diffusion line; and Kiton are selling some ugly-ass jeans.

Now, when I was a lad...

Is this decline in quality only seen with Luigi Borrelli suits made for Yoox or all current Luigi Borrelli suits? I'm thinking of snagging some Luigi Borrelli suits but am hesitant now

My only personal experience is with their shirts and ties, of which I purchased many years ago before the brand was restructured. Excellent quality!

I’ve been in their Madison Ave boutique. The prices for their tailored clothing is quite modest compared to before. I cannot imagine at those prices they are artisinally made and with a lot of handwork. Just my observation and I could be wrong.

@Phileas Fogg Is there Madison Avenue store still open? I thought it closed a few years ago?

The last time I was in there was about 2 years ago. You could be right. I'm not a big Borrelli fan so I had just popped in with time to kill.

I do believe they have a midtown location now. Perhaps it's where they moved?

Not to mention their lame track suits.

Regarding Borrelli, I recall reading on another thread here last year sometime, that another company had taken over Borrelli and the decline of quality was noted.

That's interesting. I didn't hear about this. Do you know the details? Link to the thread?

I'm not sure if this means anything to anyone outside of the menswear industry, but on Borrelli's own website, under "contact us" it lists Giamp SRL.

From my research, it looks like Borrelli's tailors of lore started their own company called Saint Gregory and the Borrelli of today is made by Cantarelli.
