    There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

    Tradititionally, my office (a law firm) has shut the office down on Thursday and Friday, just like virtually every other professional office in the country. However, our new "Director of Administration" (who is fresh out of college with a stage design degree and got the job thanks to daddy) has issued an edict that the office will remain open with business as usual. It doesn't even provide the BS that we need the extra hours due to lost productivity from Sandy. I don't know whether the management committee approved or whether she is just trying to be that Grinch who Stole Thanksgiving.

    Presumably, staff will either have to show or get docked pay. Beyond the fact that this is UnAmerican, doing this the week of when people have travel plans and such just really seems disgusting.

    It is all just ridiculous..... now waiting for the mutiny.

    What type of widgets do you sell? I take it that they are not subject to increased demand over the holiday season? Just curious as most of my clients had their inventory control audits/inspections well before now. Trying to do it during high shipping season has always turned into a disaster.

    Of course that is why people use this time of year to defraud their secured lenders...

    Furniture. And, yeah - there is a seasonal bump in demand, but it's one of those Management Things where they want to be able to close out the books - shipping considerations be damned. We used to do this on New Year's which meant a LOT of recounting.

    Interesting. Shipping has to be perfect at this time of the year for my clients. My clients cannot afford the loss of business and chargebacks that would be incurred as a result. Department Stores do not take too kindly to empty shelves and seem to increase the severity of their chargebacks at this time of year.

    Most of my clients have adjusted their fiscal years to avoid the need to have a hard close at year end. Instead they typically do monthly closings and testing and a big reconciliation either quarterly or biannually depending on volumes. It is more work, but keeps the factor/lenders happier.

    As per the "director," a big portion of my problem with her is that the millenials do not get work. She does not understand why she cannot make the same amount as an attorney with 10 years experiance here. She doesn't carry a blackberry, answer emails outside of 9-5 and generally doesn't want to do any work. I have heard from her too many times that such and such is not her job.

    One of her big gripes is that no one respects her or takes her seriously. Perhaps this is because she updates her facebook page that she is hungover or put off doing a paper for her part time grad program until the last min and calls in sick.

    Or perhaps it is because she just told the staff that she will not be in on Friday and that if they fail to show they will be docked a days pay or vacation day. Not ever having a real job, she doesn't know how to interact with anyone in person, prefering to send emails for everything, and doesn't understand why the people that made travel arrangments are now pissed. These staff members are now stuck choosing between ruining the trip to grandma's house and keeping their job. It doesn't make them happy and I cannot blame them.

    Yep today... I just got called out for my sarcasm on the subject. Someone made a big deal out of the fact that an individual was accidentally left off a internal email distribution list. I told them that I am backed up with deadlines and suggested that we schedule a meeting to discuss further on either Thursday or Friday....

    They did not like the comment said i was being glib and then started lecturing me about how its a holiday and blah blah and blah. Haha.

    Man, I can't wait until the millenials are running things and no one really shows up for that crazy work business, or supervises, or any of that old-economy nonsense. Money will just grow on trees, milk and honey will flow freely from your iFridge, and no one will be butthurt because everyone's just a virtual person anyway.

    This is something that I have a lot of trouble with as I move to a firm leadership position rather than just in my practice area. IMO there are two ways you can lead i) out of respect or ii) out of fear. When given the choice, everyone would choose to lead by respect. Leading by respect, however, requires that people want to succeed and excel at their job. My experiances indicate that people that are satisfied with mediocrity or the status quo do not respond well to this method because they never want to go that extra mile to get the job done right.

    I have yet to have a millenial to work with me that has an inate desire excel at their career. They do not understand why they have to stay late, check their blackberries and respond to a client immediately. They do not understand that ho-hum work product is unacceptable. I tell them that I do not want to review any drafts that they are not confident in signing their name to and defending it to the court on the law and the client on the fees. In this line of work, all you have is your name and once it is sullied, opportunity goes with it. Despite this, I get sloppy work product and cannot get passed page three reading before I return it to them noting that the product is unacceptable.

    Occasioninally it is a lack of understanding, too many times it is a lack of effort-- misspelled words, defined terms being misused, and poor argument structure. It all reflects that they have not put the work and care into it. Recently, an associate assured me that they had spent at least X amount of hours on this project. My response was that the work didn't show it. With them standing in my office, I pulled up the billing summary and found that they had put in 1/4 of the hours. No matter how hard i try, coaching, as the firm leadership committee pushes, never seems to get any results with these kids. Their name and a good work product (Not to mention keeping a job in this economy) are not enough of a motivator.

    I am beginning to think that fear and swift consequneces are the only motivators that may be effective in dealing with the millenials. Perhaps being afraid of losing their job and having to tell Mom and Dad that not only are they going to have to up their allowance to pay for the PBR's. I think the Steve Jobs Model may be the only effective way to deal with these fragile little creatures.


    Remainder of the story developing. If it breaks the way I think it will..... This will be great.

    Canceling with so little notice is just bullshit. Sandy happened several weeks ago...and that decision should have been made soon after it passed...or at least some warning of the possibility be given. Sorry to hear. How much support does this decision have from her seniors?

    As far as a your comment on millennials...we are the sorriest fucking generation to come out of America that I can think of. I'm '85, and I agree wholeheartedly with the above sentiments. I would love to say, speaking from the inside, that this lady is not representative of us. But she is. She absa-fucking-lutely is.

    My biggest pet peeve with us is how we are dealing with our student loan debts. Yes, the loan system is fucked...but we signed a contract...a contract which fucked us...but a contract nonetheless. I have to read on Facebook about various friends "occupying" things against their loans. I paid mine off, 60k+, in 3 years. I know we all can't do that...I don't expect us to. But this whole "blame someone else" is typical of our sense of entitlement and our inability to understand what real work entails. Work is a part of life, not something that happens outside of it. And the younger you are, the more it should be part of your life. If you are under 30, it should damn well near dominate your life. The older you get, the less you should have to work (as you have a family and actually have earned that sense of entitlement). That just makes sense to me. People in their twenties viewing that period of their lives as an extension of college is [​IMG].

    Fuck I hate millennials. And sorry to rant in your thread. And sorry about your Thanksgiving. I hope something good comes out of all of it.

    You should be thankful that you're not in China. Here it's 1000 times worse, although here it's with credit card debt, and not student loans. People here have no fiscal control at all. Having a total debt (stemming from over-consumption, not buying property etc) equaling several YEARS worth of salary isn't that uncommon. Now, given the price vs salary ratio, this is actually pretty easy to achieve, but still. People here have NO idea what fiscal responsibility means(or any kind of responsibility for that matter).

    I was referring to Americans (of which I am one). I think you may have misunderstood my gripe. I wasn't referring to debt; people are more than welcome to incur all the dumb debt they want.

    It was the sense of entitlement that a lot of people of my generation seem to have, that and a lack of discipline. Gen X has the same problem but nowhere near this degree. A lot of us seem to expect good things to happen to us NOW and intend on putting in the hard work LATER. I don't know if it's coddling by Baby Boomer parents or what. But it's disgusting.

    Again, not all of this generation is like this. It does appear, however, to be one of our most defining traits.

    As far as Asia goes...I know South Koreans of a similar age don't share this problem. They may be fiscally irresponsible, but they don't for a second believe they deserve what the world gives them just for being born. They work and work hard (though not always efficiently). I'd be surprised if the Chinese, perhaps excepting an entitled elite, were the same. Such sentiment seems to be generally found in countries which are several generations into development, and it is particularly bad in the US because our individualism has led to an "everybody is special" mentality.

    Turns out that she was told to advise everyone about this a few days after the storm hit. Our offices were without phones and consistent internet for several days. I was eventually able to get us stable and hobbling along Thursday or Friday after the storm. At that point the call was made by managment to encourage people to work given the anticipated losses were growing rapidly. There are enough single people and guys who hate their wives that even light days would give a bump and soften the blow.

    As it turned out her encouragment to people to stay home and "be safe" (in her emails to employees who were trying to make it into the office but would be late) made a big difference. As it turns out now, my numbers show that we are down 35-40% in hours from projections and collections have slowed dramatically. As management suspected, we need those hours.

    She purpose chose not to tell anyone in October and not issue the memo, presumably thinking that she was entitled to the days off and hoped that managment would reverse course. She has a very friendly ear in one of the senior partners and sent him to plead her case yesterday before sending the email. It did not go over too well... hence the internal discord yesterday.

    All issues and complaints are now being referred to her to deal with. One would presume she would show some compassion since she is largely to blame-- nope. She then tells people she has pre-existing plans for Friday and as such she will not be coming in. Finally, she has the chutzpah to then tell everyone how she intends to use her remaining sick days and vacation days for the remainder of the year.

    Good luck with that, man. I think that once they play the narrative that The Man is unfair and against them, it's easy to play the victim to everyone - mommy and daddy included. I tend to think that mommy and daddy are the problems in allowing every excuse to fly and never holding them accountable. It's a huge struggle, particularly when they're all in their echo chamber.
