DC -Butcher

can anyone recommend a good butcher in the downtown Washington DC area? preferable if they aren't too far away from metro stops because I have to walk everywhere.

I'm getting a little tired of the bad supermarket

I'm looking for a dedicated butcher as well, but in Northern VA though I wouldn't be 100% opposed to DC if they're REALLY good.

Two suggestions: Eastern Market on Capitol Hill has a few butchers (and a fish monger). It's open every day and is a few blocks from the Eastern Market Metro. The other place is Brookeville Market in Cleveland Park. It's small, but butcher there knows her stuff.

I've found Whole Foods to have pretty decent meat. I gave up on finding a decent butcher when I was in northern VA and just went there.

Have you been to the Lebanese Butcher in Falls Church? They have their own slaughter facility out in Winchester (or somewhere nearby), and their prices are reasonable. They are also Halal, they mainly focus on lamb but i've seen beef there as well.

And if you have not eaten yet the restaurant next door is pretty good, get the spicy lamb sausage!

Of course the ambience is not like Whole Foods (but i think the quality at WF isn't that great anyway...)

Lebanese Butcher may have the best Middle Eastern food anywhere in America. The clientele is largely Arabs who work for their embassies and Americans who have lived in the Middle East.

A good butcher is Wagshal's in DC's Spring Valley. It's on Mass Ave between American University and Ward Circle. Expensive as hell.

I'll second Wagshal's in Spring Valley (just a 100 yards or so down Mass. Ave. from the American University Law School). Closest subway station is Tenleytown. Can't go wrong with them. I've been happy with Whole Foods too, and it's convenient. But, if you want something special, or a unique/large cut, Wagshals is more than happy to get you what you want, whereas I'd be surprised if WF did the same. Wagshals will also get you special fish/seafood if you call a day or two ahead. There's also a Wagshals at Little Falls Mall in Bethesda, off of Sangamore (not walking distance to a subway though).

By the way, my brother is big on Costco's meat/fish, and I can't say that food I've had at his house hasn't been excellent. In the last few months, I've had both succulent scallops and delicate filet mignon that was purchased at the Pentagon City Costco.

I've tried the Pentagon City costco and it has been quite good...I really haven't liked what I get at wholefoods/safeway/traderjoes so eh. I'm just not too keen on costco size portions of meat...I need variety which is why I just wanted a butcher that I can go to and get w/e I plan on cooking for a night or something.

I'll try out the Eastern Market one.
