Daytime, Black Dress Boots, with Sportcoat (or Less)?

What do you think of wearing, in daytime, black dress boots with just a sportcoat or less formal clothing? Is that color 'proper'? Many people would say that dress shoes in daytime and not to the office or formal events shouldn't be black. On the other hand, work boots in black are okay to most.

Anyone who says that black dress shoes in the daytime, during non-work related functions, are inappropriate is an idiot. For whatever reason, people seem to be hard-on for walnut, but black is king of shoe colors. I personally like burgundy as my second option and THEN walnut/cognac

I dislike black shoes under these circumstances and find dark brown or deep burgundy colored shoes would be viewed as more commonly accepted I would only consider black dress shoes under these circumstances if one was to also wear a black suit. But a black suit, worn in the daytime, is only for the Armani label whore crowd or for a waiter or bodyguard...not a man with any understanding of classic style

I would argue that its not the colour but the style that matters. With normal trousers the fact a balmoral boot is anything more than a brogue isn't really obvious. The Chelsea boot on the other hand is so distinctive that its place as a casual-formal boot is already well documented.

To the original poster. . .I've got a pair of Cleverley black chelsea boots that I wear to the office all the time, with just a sport coat.

I can think of many daytime casual combos including sport coat and black dress boots.
However, while I have several pairs of brown, dark grey or burgundy ankle boots, I must admit that I have not a single pair of black ones.
