I couldn't believe my eyes. I can't recall ever seeing Letterman in anything except DB threads. Start of a new trend? Or another sign of the impending collapse of Western Civilization? [IMG]

He's been doing that for a while--several months at least.  IIRC, someone here or over at Ask Andy said something about his tailor basically making him one on spec to get him to try something different. Still mostly wearing the DB, though.

He seems to prefer to wear the jackets of his DB suits opened, which can be a bit unwieldy, so the SB jacket might be more practical for his tendencies. I do hope Mr. Corvato, his tailor evidently, also shortens his trousers a bit, too, as the break has been way too much.

Yes, but his SB comes with peak lapel.

I think it is one of his (many) fetishes: a low-vamp loafer showing light-coloured socks. It creeps me out when I first saw it (together with a partially buttoned DB jacket), but after all these years, I have gotten quite used to it.

Before moving to CBS, did Letterman wear suits?  A stipulation of his contract with CBS is that, given his immense salary, he wear suits, which management deems appropriate.  Letterman's white socks might be his subtle homage to his inherent sartorial preferences.

Actually, I don't think he ever wore suits when he was on NBC. He used to wear blue blazers or sport coats with chinos quite a lot, sometimes with sneakers. So, the white socks probably are a holdover from/homage to his high-tops with khakis era.

In his next contract negotiations, one of Letterman demands needs to be giving up the suits. Maybe harkening back to his old NBC years, when he was actually funny and creative, will rekindle the old glory. Speaking as a Letterman fan, despite the consistent mediocrity of his CBS show.

Never, ever did like his unbottoned DB jackets...just looks sloppy or like a rich guy trying very hard to get even more attention (much like the character Jack Gallow on the sitcom Just Shoot Me, who often wore unbottoned DB jackets with odd vests underneith...makes me shudder to this day. By the way, DR, where are you? I'm in Grand Forks.

Thanks for reminding me of this, I ment to mention it on the forum. I came home from an evening function and had a bit much wine, leading me to forgot about the SB that I saw Dave wearing.

I thought he looked sharp, much better than an unbuttoned DB.

I think Dave wears some of the nicest tailored clothing on tv; I think most of us would agree that most tv personalities fail miserably in the clothing dept. I love the single brested peaked lapels he's been wearing. I've been meaning to search the forums to see who his tailor is; I'm a life long fan of the guy.

To the comments above, I think he does the half buttoned DB, the light socks, and sometimes a too short or long tie to look a little ironic or less serious. He clearly grew up sartiorally when he came to CBS, but you can still see when he's caught off camera that clothes aren't his first priority. During the show, he'll usually take off his jacket at every commercial break and throw it down on the chair (or once in a while the floor).

I think David Letterman wears really nice suits. However he seems to sometimes pick some really shiny fabrics--though that could be a side effect of TV studio lighting. Personally prefer Jay Leno's comedy, and I appreciate that he sometimes wears sports jackets (my personal preference over suits).

Regarding the the break in Dave's trousers, I have the issue where I leave home with just the kind of break that I like, but I arrive in the city with my trousers ridden down so far as to crumple miserably over my shoes. Anyone here know if Letterman wears suspenders or belts? Any members here actually a customer of Nino Corvato?

I'd have to admit that Letterman looks best in peak lapel, given his slim and slightly long face.

Anyone catch Letterman last night? He was in a navy 3-piece...I think that is a first.
