Divorcee sues a lonely hearts agency over her eight dire dates

Also, as promised, here is the essence of a story overheard by one of the consultants. A young woman went on a date arranged through some website. At the last minute, her date warned her that he had gained some weight. When she met him at the coffee shop, she met an obese man wearing tight cloth-like shorts. The retelling focused almost entirely on his unacceptable appearance, though it seems he was reasonably personable.

She's not exactly God's gift to men either.

These bad experiences are hardly limited to dating services over the pond:

    http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2006/02/ijl.html

The problem is that dating services are only as good as their members, and the internet has pretty much rendered traditional dating services obsolete. To use an SF analogy, it's the difference between having your wardrobe picked out by a B&M salesman who doesn't know you that well and is limited to the store's in-stock merchandise, and creating a wardrobe yourself from eBay, Lance, Ian, Andrew, etc.

I once had a date (through an online dating service) with a woman who described herself as 4'10" and 115lbs (or thereabouts). That's on the short side, but essentially is the size of a friend's ex-wife who I know and she looks acceptable. Upon meeting this woman for lunch she, it turned out, is nearly a "little person" and couldn't have been over 4'2" if she was even that tall. That's a significant difference.

Aside from her height was a horribly negative attitude and I never called her back.

And I'm going to sue the website because this one woman was less-than-honest? Nope, it's not their fault. It's her fault.

I once met a girl online when I was younger. She contacted me because she knew someone I knew. We talked a lot for a few weeks then I decided to finally meet her and take her out to a local club (techno night all ages, I was 17). She looked good in her picture, kinda average but cute. Never trust a picture that does not show the person's full body or them standing. When I went to pick her up her sister was outside I hoped it was her, she was skinny and decently cute. The sister proceded to get the girl. When I saw her my Mind freaked. If I was in my car I would have just driven off. She was about 5'9"-6' and weighed about 200+ Lbs. Scared the shit out of me. She didnt even dress nice or anything. I took her to the club and more or less lost her in the croud for a while. She later got a ride home from a friend. A couple days later she had a friend AIM me asking what I thought. They wanted to know if I though of her as girlfriend Material. I said NO! and she never talked to me again.

You'd think she would have gotten the idea from the above that she wasn't girlfriend material...
That happened to a friend of mine, but the situation was perhaps even more awkward. He arranged to meet up with a girl that he met online, and she came from two states away to stay at his house. The picture she sent him was like a senior picture type, and she looked ok but when she showed up she could have played lineman, this girl was just enormous. It was an "interesting" weekend for my friend...

And now we have confirmation as to why women say men can be such jerks. You didn't even attempt to be polite. For gawd's sake man, be a gentleman. She didn't lie to you, she didn't misrepresent herself in anyway--she just didn't look the way you wanted. And you stranded her. Not nice.

well she got a ride home from a friend because she didnt want to stay as long as I did. Did I mention I was 17 at the time? Damn Karma got me in the end and I dated a stupid fat girl for like 3 years after that summer. Dont ask me what I was thinking because I dont remember why I even dated her or why I let her and her parents almost force us into getting married. She had mental problems and could control me by threating to kill herself or just by whining constantly, So I would do what she wanted just to shut her up)

Three years? And you're calling her stupid? [IMG] [IMG]

Serously, if she really had mental problems, you're being a little rough on her.

I suppose I am being a bit rough, but I just wish I broke up with her sooner and I wish she wasnt (still) trying to get revenge on me for breaking up with her. No one ever said I wasnt stupid too. At one point I was young, stupid and tired of being single and ready to throw away my life. When I realized where it was going I snaped out of it and broke up with her then proceded to party till 4am most days for a month (and have to be up for work at 630 am).

At some point, reason says that webcam profiles on dating websites will become popular. An accurate physical representation (with body language) says a lot about a person. It also skews judgment of personality traits, such that negative or positive qualities are exaggerated or more readily noticed. (E.g., he is boring and lazy, because he didn't say much that was interesting, his clothes were dull, and he is overweight.) How, or whether, dating can ever be a non-superficial process makes this kind of an unpleasant subject.

I always thought that was the point of actually going on a date with someone. Maybe I'm old-fashioned (with the proviso that I met my fiancee on an on-line dating service).

Ratboy, yeah, you were 17 and hopefully you've grown since then. But your story about the "stupid fat" woman you dated seems to say you haven't. Truly, if karma worked (dharma by the way), you would have gone on a date with someone you really fancied and she would have treated you like crap because she thought you were ugly.
