I've recently bought a pair of Paul Evans monks. I like the look a lot, but i find them a little uncomfortable with extended wear. I got a pair of To Boot New York monks a couple of years ago, and they are much more comfortable, but I don't wear them a lot.I also have a pair of Allen Edmonds Strand, also probably not comfortable enough for daily wear.

I really like those, but will my feet?

I'd like some suggestions on a nice, quality, comfortable pair that I can wear daily or near daily.

Thanks!

I find To Boot's quality a little disappointing for the retail price, and the shapes aren't that appealing. There's something about them that looks off. They often seem a bit too stylized and don't look great in outfits.

If you're already looking at the $400 price point, have you considered RM Williams or Carmina?

It's a small detail, but one of the nice things about RM Williams is that they're a wholecut Chelsea boot. That means that they cut the uppers from one piece of leather, rather than piece them together. On the To Boot shoes you linked, you can see how there's a seam just beneath the elasticated gorge. On a pair of RM Williams, there is no side seam.

Mostly, I think the shapes on RM Williams and Carmina are a lot more appealing. Depending on the shape and size of your jeans, you can wear them with jeans (some jeans are a bit full, and for those, I'd go with a slightly different shaped Chelsea. Very slim Chelseas under full pants can look a bit odd). They also work with tailored trousers and chinos.

Comfort is going to be partly an effect of whether the shoes fit you well. It's hard for people online to tell you whether your shoes fit. Always best to buy from a reputable store that can give you good service.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't heard of those brands. I'll check them out. The Carmina look to be a little too tall for my taste. The RM Williams have a strangely high profile at the top of the foot. I do have a high instep, though. I generally like how both look, though.

For daily wear durability, should I stay away from a leather sole? They seem to wear rather quickly. On thing I'm looking for is a lower top.

I’ve got several Chelseas but for daily wear you can’t go wrong with Meermin whole cuts on a city sole.

I think you just missed out on Meermin doing a custom order with which you could choose your leather, colour, sole etc.
Pics and write up here - good luck!

For a less expensive option, especially given these are for daily wear, these Meermins might hit the spot!

If you haven't worn leather soles before, I think they can look like they're wearing down fast when they're not. I think this is partly because you can easily see the fraying and wearing around the edges. I find leather soles wear just fine, although, if you can, I would stick to rubber on rainy days. Leather soles can wear down faster when they're wet. Not the end of the world, but just something to keep in mind.

I find studded Dainte soles to feel a bit more comfortable and flexible out of the box than leather, but it depends on the shoes.

If you want a Chelsea boot with a lower top, check Crockett & Jones. I believe they offer a model like that, but am not 100% certain.

Note, Meermins are a great value, but they're tougher to break in at first.

Just FYI OP I tried on some Crockett and Jones in New York - they have several models and they were IIRC $680.

I have Meermins with a dainite sole and was surprised that they were somewhat rigid but quite comfortable and bouncy. Meermin shoes have a bit of a reputation on SF for being hard to break in but my latest pair of Meermin Chelseas are in ‘soft calf’ with a rubber ‘City sole’ and were comfortable right out of the box. Cost was about $250.

I tried on a pair of Allen Edmonds Liverpools and they were extremely comfortable and stylish. I am just waiting for them to go on sale to purchase them.

A little disappointed they only come in black and walnut, though. I think a nice mahogany brown would be way nicer for that kind of boot.

C&J Chelsea boots are worth the investment. They fit like slippers and can be worn all day.

I have 7 pairs of Chelsea boots, for the price range you're talking, I'm most impressed with Yanko and Barker Mansfield. Patina in Poland has excellent service and prices on Yanko. www.patina.pl

RM Williams Chelsea boots are quite good quality at the price.

For daily wear, I like that RM Williams boots are designed to be narrower through the ankles - it really helps them grip your foot properly so you don't get the heel slipping up and down as you walk. Also, I find the slightly squared-off toe essential in narrower slightly dressy Chelsea boots - rounded toe boots are just too long and awkward. I own 3 or 4 pairs of RM Williams. https://bootsonline.com.au/boots

For low-price casual kicking around, I wear Blundstones. They have incredibly durable rubber soles, and also have a narrower fit around the ankle.

I have the Comfort Craftsman and agree. My only complain is that I find the rubber "non slip sole" very slippery in wet pavement.

For a slimmer Chelsea, you might also want to consider the Barbanera del Dongo boot.

Thanks everyone. Ordered the Meermins. Don't know if they are too small or just need breaking in. They are digging into the back of my heel, and my toes are not scrunched, but they are also not allowed to spread much. The length feels right, I think. But they are just a touch narrow. They seem quite stiff.

What do you think?
