What are these metal additions to the heel of these boots (vintage Hartt)? The little steel slips look like spacers or some such.

That is the insert for spurs. They must be the RCMP quarter wellingtons. If you search quarter wellington on this thread I think there are some photos of a pair with spurs in.

Ah, from a search just now I see you're right! I haven't encountered this insert before, but I suppose they go with a certain type of spur.

They're well-made boots too.

For our own ongoing record of vintage Canadian footwear, I thought I would post these pictures from a current eBay listing of a lovely pair of RCMP Strathcona boots manufactured by Hartt in 1940. As we know from previous discussions, the original Strathcona boots date back as far as the Boar war, and were manufactured by Slater. At some point, likely in 1940's, MacFarlane and Levaivre of Montreal was the prime manufacturer, followed by Hartt from 1974 to 1998.

However it is my understanding that during the war years, when demand was higher for the use of these boots by both the RCMP and elements of the armed forces, other manufacturers were contracted to build Strathconas. It appears that this pair was one of these.

Beautiful boots in great shape. Just too damn expensive for me.

Picked these up yesterday. I'd avoided thrift stores for the last few months just because they were so awful in the spring. But might have to check them out more frequently now:

McHale LWBs from their premier line.

These are 8.5ee, so they do pinch my pinky toes a little. But I am slowly breaking them in, and a cobbler will eventually stretch them.

But today I picked up these fine cap-toe bluchers by Hartt, with the 1958-1968 sock-liner, made after the acquisition of Hartt by Dacks. A nice solid pair of double soled, seven nailed shoes (8.5E); perhaps my luck is changing. I do tend to run hot for awhile and then have long slumps.

It is quite surprising that you are able to find so many great condition Canadian vintage shoes given the rough winter weather they are exposed to.

Well, they're slightly too big, but beautiful all the same.

Who did the work. Nice job! I am dropping some work with your cobbler from London tomorrow. I will be doing the exact rebuild that you just did in my John McHale elephant derbys. They also need some interior liner rebuild.

I stopped at the Belleville Value Village today en route from Ottawa to London. I just about fell over when I saw this pair of John McHale Bombers sitting on the shelf. These are only the 3rd pair true John McHales that I have thrifted.

Those look fantastic. I used to stop in the Belleville VV 3 or 4 times a year when going from Toronto to Ottawa and almost every time there were a pair of Dacks or Hartt sitting waiting for me. Once got 2 pair of Chelsea boots, one in black and the other in brown. I need to travel again!
