Dacks and other Canadian shoe brands

Asked same question in Vintage Shoe Thread, hope that’s okay…

Hey all, some cobbler advice please.

I’d like to resole (GYW) the nice-ish pair of LWs I picked up a ways back and am looking at recommendations for the required work. Preferred in Winnipeg (hah), followed by Canadian options. The resole will be full rubber, serious grip needed! For that reason I guess I don’t really need an artisan, yet I’m loathe to hand them over to someone who doesn’t actually do that kind of work, as I hope whoever is really good would put the same care into the job no matter how fancy or basic the shoe.

Are the Dack's made in New Brunswick Custom Grade shoes welted, blake stitched, or glued?

Picked these up in the wild today! Dack’s Split toe derby with a beautiful patina. A little heel wear but that double sole is going very strong! Still trying to polish my Dack’s identification but I believe it’s an 11C? Anyone got an idea of year?

I recently found these Slater Custom Imperial shoes at a thrift store but I don't know very much about them or the brand, which I believe is Canadian.

They appear to be fairly old but I'm not sure when exactly they would be from? If anybody has insight on that I would appreciate it!

I'm also not sure what type of leather they are, is it some kind of exotic like Prairie Oxhide or just regular pebbled leather?



The soles and heels appear to have been replaced at some point.

There was also a fabric tag inside that has since been removed.



Any information would be appreciated, thanks!

Lovely find - and a great patina! I've picked up a few pairs with a nice patina on them and decided to not give the full Saphir treatment, preferring to leave them as found -- kind of like an antique, where stripping it of its grime and dirt would diminish its value. Anyone else ever do this?

If they have a patina that I like then I don’t dare touch them lol. These ones I felt comfortable with putting some renovating cream on at least since they had a waxier finish to them

They have what Dacks called their "hand waxed finish". A type of corrected finish. They came from the factory with that patina look. Mid 70's based on the shoe liner.

Many of their ladies' handbags were made from snakeskin. You can usually find one listed on Etsy.

They sold some lovely Italian men's footwear as well. In my opinion their made to order John McHale shoes were among the very best ever made. A whole quality level above the standard John McHale Custom shoe offerings, and that is saying something.

Yeah my google-fu led me to seeing some of the snakeskin bags
i'm struggling to find any information about Tricker's producing for them at all.
These don't have a "made in x" stamp anywhere, so i'm assuming Made in England


I believe one of your pairs of McHale for Owen & Elmes came from me

I drove from Ottawa to Montreal today to snag this pair of early 1950's John McHale Custom brogues, made by Scott-McHale. The build quality on the pre-1959 shoes is amazing. They are a 10.5D (my size). Finding 1950's versions of my favourite Canadian shoes is one of my main collecting goals, so I am pretty happy with this pair.

You can always tell the pre-1959 McHales by the long axis orientation of the sock-liner text, as well as the mention of London, Canada. The display stand is from the 40's or 50's.
