I have a last minute trip to DC coming up. I went to Philly last year and a lot of you here gave me some great useful information not only on shops to check out but restaurants and bars.

Hoping to get some similar input. My GF and I will be staying at Hotel Madera in Dupont Circle.

Near Dupont Circe, there's Filene's Basement. Be sure to go upstairs for the best selection. Currently they're taking advance orders for a suit sale (25% off all suits). Hopefully it will have begun in earnest while you're there so you can take delivery. An Allen Edmonds store is in the area, and also in the neighborhood is a J. Press store

There's a Red Line Metro stop at Dupont Circle. A few stops north on the Red Line is the neighborhood of Friendship Heights, where there is a Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Polo Ralph Lauren, Bloomingdale's, Lord and Taylor, and another Filene's Basement (not as good selection at the one near Dupont Circle).

In upper Georgetown there's Sky Valet (http://www.skyvalet1.com) for their high-end shoes. There's also a Polo Ralph Lauren in Georgetown but they don't have as large selection as the one in Friendship Heights. Take the DC Circulator to these places.

If you have a car, a couple malls of interest are in the area known as Tysons Corner, about 15-20 minutes west of Dupont Circle. You can drive about 40 minutes south of Dupont (with no traffic) to Potomac Mills outlet mall if you want to try your luck there... of note there is a Nordstrom Rack and a Saks Off Fifth. Or about the same distance north of DC is Arundel Mills outlet mall which has a Neiman Marcus Last Call and a Saks Off Fifth.

Off the top of my head, that's about all I think of but there's a Washington DC sales thread with more places to consider:

In terms of bars, what kind of places are you looking for? And for restaurants, if you'll be in town from 8/11-8/17, the Restaurant Week promotion will be in progress.

There's a store called Sherman Pickey, also in upper Georgetown, that might be of some interest if you like preppy/trad stuff (Southwick, Vineyard Vines, Barbour, etc.). James at Tyson's Corner has Canali, Borrelli, and the like. A store called Bruno Cipriani at White Flint Mall in Bethesda, Maryland, has what they claim to be the largest selection of RTW Borrelli shirts on the east coast. I don't doubt it. They have walls and walls of them. They also got a Borrelli shir to fit me pretty well, while the Borrelli store in NYC failed miserably.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with DC so I thought I would add, for reference:

"Upper Georgetown" in this case means on Wisconsin at 34th (Sky Valet is across the street from Safeway).

RL and other shops in Georgetown are at Wisconsin and M.

A 30-line bus will take you from Wisc and M all the way to Friendship Heights, if you want the public transport way. You will not be able to take Metro into G-town.

The DC circulator bus is okay I guess if you don't want to get a cab and don't mind being stuck in traffic for a long time because of all the stops it makes and the long route. Personally, if I was going to Georgetown, I would just take the metro to the Foggy Bottom stop, then catch a cab.

I've become quite accustomed to taking the Red Line to Dupont Circle and Friendship Heights. I usually take a taxi to Sky Valet. Fortunately, I have to be in DC in a month or so and look forward to visiting DC stores.

Bobber's advice is excellent. I would add that there is also a Brooks Brothers and a Thomas Pink near the Filene's Basement, south of Dupont Circle. There is also a Brooks Brothers, Tiffany's, Cartiers, etc., in Chevy Chase.

The Ralph Lauren in Chevy Chase is one of the few stores to carry Black/Purple label, and is, if I recall correctly, the only one in the DC area.

Come visit us at Denimbar, just across the Anacostia river, south of downtown. It's not a far Metro ride from Dupont Circle.

just a note- I was at Everard's last week checking out his selection of Martegani shoes. In the end, I didnt get the shoes, but the service was great. Right next door is Field's tailor, who is currently altering some of my OTR suits. He also does MTM shirts, although he says he send them out instead of actually doing them himself. As mentioned, this is also right next door to Sky Valet shoes.

I know that Everard's does a lot of MTM with Hickey Freeman. I went to the last Hickey Trunk show there and picked up a suit. The customer service is great, a complete no pressure environment.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
