Customizing the Waist on a Dress Shirt Fit Question?

I'm fairly lean in the waist, muscular within in reason in the chest/shoulder/back area, how lean should one customize their shirts?

What's in good taste that balances a lean fit yet not to the extremity where one looks silly?

Any guidelines as I hate 'bunching' in the waist yet I assume a reasonable amount would look better than complete taper where one may portend a extreme V shape.

Thanks for any insights.

measure around your waist, a couple of inches above your navel, or at the slimmest point. add about 5". that's as slim as you want to go. i'd say about 8" larger would be a standard customized fit.
