I cant hurt to treat the leather right away, but 99% of the time it is not necessary. Unless you plan to tromp around in the wet, or fight fires the day you receive them. The leather White's uses is pretty "fresh" so the chances of them being super dry when you receive them is not really something to worry about.

Treat them. On any given day you do not know what you might step in or get caught in. It only takes one time and little bad luck to end up having to deal with something that is easily avoidable.

Okay, getting close I think to figuring out my Semi-Dress configuration, which I hope to order before too long. Here's what I am thinking, with still a few uncertainties:

    - 461 last. I like the upturned toe.
    - Straight heel, 1/4" lowered.
    - Cap toe.
    - Natural edge finish.
    - Standard trim (probably).

-- Still unsure about leather. I like the Black Chromexcel, but am just a little worried about the stretching and aging issues. Thinking of Black Oil Tan ("smooth") and Black Dress as well. Not sure about the matte finish of the Oil Tan, and breaking in that thick leather.

    - Still unsure about sole. I like the looks of the 269, but am unsure of traction. Thinking also of "commando mini lug half sole" and the 700 or 705 half soles. In this regard, does anyone know if Whites does the 705 half sole with that figure 8 sort of stitching? (Pic attached.) And I am not clear on the differences between the 700 and 705. Finally, can anyone testify to the traction of the 700/705?

Getting close... Thanks for all the help.

I`m afraid Whites dont make the stitching you refer to. As regards the 269 sole, for around town use its perfectly fine. If you are using this in `off road` terrain, then yes, a sole with more tread would be best.

One other question: I understand that the celastic toe provides some structure for the boot toe, but what does the "double" celastic toe add? Does it change the shape of the boot at all?

^if you're going for 1/4 lowered block heels, i suggest to stay with the full sole unit like the 700s,
unless you've got safety issues using them @work, you don't need double Celastic.

for those that have ordered White's via Baker's...did you receive any sort of shipping or delivery confirmation, or did your order just show up at your doorstep without prior warning?

Quick question: I know that the standard heel on Whites semi-dress is 1 1/2 inches. But is that measured from the bottom of the sole (so that the heel itself is that tall), or is it measured from the bottom of the boot leather (so that the sole is included in the inch-and-a-half)?

Trying to compare with my other boots and get a sense of what to expect... If one of you with your White's there could do a quick measure and confirm it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

5cm for both cuban and block heel from bottom of rubber to top of sole where it hits the shoe leather at the back of the shoe. Top to bottom

General Wisdom is half a size down. Those who get them true to size typically have "in-between" or wider feet.
