Quick question from a White’s newbie.

I managed to find a almost new pair of C350cs for a great price and have always fancied a pair of Whites.

I was expecting them to feel different to anything else I’ve had but just wanted to check if they sound alright.

The boots feel like a nice fit, fairly snug around my heel and arch area but not uncomfortably so and plenty of toe room.

The arch feels unusual which I totally expected having read about White’s in the past. No pain though having worn them around the house.

The bit that I’m unsure of is that I feel like I’m “stomping” around in them/they feel strange to walk in.

Is this normal as they’re very chunky, thick sole, sprung toe and arch. Is it just a matter of getting used to a very different build? I hope so as I love them!

I haven’t really had anything like these in the past coming from Red Wing, Trickers, C&J and Viberg 2030.

I plan to either trim the kilties or make some alternative ones. I do have some leatherwork background.

Nice boots! You're probably not used to the extra weight and the shape of the last, both of which could be contributing to the feel of them on your feet. Not everyone likes this much weight and arch support. But it's worth wearing longer before making up your mind

You’re probably right. I’m happy to persevere with them and sure I’ll get used to the weight/arch.

I’ve already made subtle kilties using some Badalassi waxed veg tan off cut I had lying around.

Does anybody with White's and or Baker's experience know if you can specifically request a different outsole? I want to get a packer with a Vibram 2040 outsole, but I am not sure if I can request this.

Not sure about 2040 but I have requested 100,700 and 430 soles on packers

The thing about the 2040 though is that it is not on their standard offerings. I tried once to request a 700 on a pair of Stevens with Baker's and they were far from accommodating, so not terribly optimistic about this request...

Baker's doesn't seem interested in accommodating certain special requests maybe? I think you'd have better luck calling White's directly.

White’s retro oxfords back from Baker’s (Drew’s) for resole and relasting. They were originally a v-bar 1/2 sole in 9E, I had them resoled with a single leather and reblocked to 9E. I think I should have gone double leather, but the work is good and they hand welted the new sole, as was done originally. Despite a lead time double the two months I was quoted, I’m happy with the work.

Out of curiosity, what was the bill for this? I have a pair of White's oxfords that need similar work. Thanks!

I don’t recall, since I had to pay up front and it took a very long time to get them back, but I think it was something in the neighborhood of $250?
