I had a custom suit made when I was out of the country a couple years back. I was a lot muscular then, now I'm probably 15 lbs less muscle. So obviously, the suit is a lot looser on me.

I won't be going out of the country anytime soon. I was wondering, is it worth getting a suit custom made or could a get a good off the rack one, say at Macys, Bloomingdales, etc.?

I'm sure other people will weigh in, but the answer, unfortunately, is that it depends.

It depends on lots of factors, but mainly on fit and cost. If you're looking for a suit, your best bet would be to go to as many stores as possible and try different brands/cuts on until you find something that fit and fit your budget. I did this, and at the end of the search, realized that nothing I could afford fit me all that well and wound up going MTM (made to measure)

Happy to provide details of where/what I bought, but I've posted about them recently and don't want to be accused of :spam:.

In your situation, I'd suggest starting at brooks brothers, probably with their trimmer cuts (the fitzgerald seems pretty popular around here) and going from there.

do you plan on keeping your weight the way it is now or do you plan on losing more? If you are I'd wait till you've reached that point. Are you easy to fit OTR?

Agree with the "it depends" response above. What do you mean by "custom"? If your choice is between Macy's/Bloomingdale's and a bespoke suit from a reputable maker, go custom. If your choice is between a nicely-made OTR suit versus Indochino or someother online MTM, I'd stay stay with off-the-rack.
