Would you just remove the buttons in order to use cufflinks?

No, you would use the button that's there and buy a different shirt with cuffs that accept cufflinks.

How can you have almost 300 posts over 2 years, and ask such a question?

As usual, Seinfeld has much to teach us.

JERRY: Nice cuff links, by the way.
GEORGE: (Pointing to them) Office Christmas gift. I tell you, this Human Fund is a gold mine!
JERRY: That's not a french cuff shirt, you know.
GEORGE: I know. I cut the button off and poked a hole with a letter opener.
JERRY: Oh, that's classy.

I have one shirt that I got second-hand that has both a button and a button hole on the same side of the cuff, so you could use the button or insert a cufflink next to the button.

That gives you a links cuff, but the problem is that the shirt pattern is so loud (a heavy red and blue tattersall), that there is no cufflink that I would use with it. It's too casual in appearance.

I have a shirt from Marks&Sparks that has cuffs like that but the buttons got in the way of the toggle of my links so I just use the buttons...after as people have said above...if I want to ware cuff links I'll just wear a shirt with french cuffs.

Theres no shame in a normal button cuff. It's not less classy, or less luxurious. In fact usually its more classy or preferable for a variety of reasons. Just wear it proudly
