I had ordered a new coat from Crombie in England. I had purchased one of their coats a few years back and the quality was top notch. I was kind of shocked to discover on the packing slip that the coat was made in Portugal as opposed to the UK. Crombie rests on it's English history laurels, touting how Churchill and George VI wore their very British coats, and their claim to have invented the covert coat (though disputed by Cordings). I was disappointed to discover that this iconic British brand is now sourcing their product in Portugal.

How was the coat? If you didn't know where it was made would you have been happy with the quality?

Manufacturing realities being what they are, it isn't surprising. The cost to produce something in the UK, US, etc in many cases rules out producing in those countries, strictly from a price point perspective. There is also the skilled worker factor, as there are often not enough skilled workers available to make products of sufficient quality to justify the required price.

Obviously a very complicated topic with lots of moving pieces.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
