Just a correction to my previous post about crocodiles and alligators mating. When I got home tonight, I consulted my source about this. It evidently occurred at some sort of animal park in Australia, so I presume the croc was a saltie. It did not say whether they produced any offspring. It would seem more probable that they didn't.

Luxury leather companies in Europe tend not to use these materials in wallet production. I do know that Launer London (maker of the Queen's handbags) do a nice range of wallets with different colored lizard interiors ... they used to do a really high-end alligator wallet for about $1K, but alas no longer.

I believe that Alligator is a better leather than Crocodile, thus it tends to be more expensive. Crocodile skin can be identified by the hair pore that is left visible after the leather is processed and treated. Alligator does not have such a physical condition.

Some manufacturers attempt to confuse the two, even sometimes calling their products alligator crocodile. It is best to avoid these companies.

Check the following website in order to be able to learn how to determine yourself the type: http://alligatorfur.com/croc.htm.

I think the consensus is that there is little to choose between American alligator and the hides of Nile or salt water crocodiles. All are rated decidedly superior to caiman hide, as the linked article clearly states. Caiman is sometimes confusingly sold as "caiman crocodile" (possibly playing on its scientific name).
