For those of you hoping to get this Black Russian Grain Islay underway... rest assured that Alex V is doing her best to fill any remaining gaps. I received an e-mail from Alex earlier today (Saturday). Sorry guys, this one is not for me... couple of things on the spec that don't do it for me (notched welt and silver eyelets). Plus another black Islay would take away time spent wearing my beautiful black shell pair!

…that, and the Whiskey hatch grain Cordovan Islay’s I recently MTO’d after being intrigued by the current Dark Brown shell limited release…

I have pondered this one a few times but the details have stayed my hand. The previous-run Russian grain Islays look great, and I'm sure these will too. But at the price of a GMTO in Russian grain, this makeup just doesn't excite me quite enough to join.

The leather is really appealing, as is a black Islay. But personally, I'd be more inclined to a leather with this much personality in a model without the brogue detailing, perhaps for something like the previous Radnor model, the Arran makeups DR has done recently, or a plain-toe Coniston on the 365. Something in that vein (ideally with all-black eyelets/hooks) would be more to my own taste and probably pull me in. At risk of future regret, I'm not joining this one. But I hope you are able to get these made.

(And separately, for a black Islay, I think @Marmite89 's shell pair is perfect and would be a very difficult-to-resist GMTO.)

It was all black everything that was a driver for my single MTO Islay. They might have all the brogue detailing, but still simple and stealthy 🥷

They look great. I think those details really suit the black shell.

I like C&J's brogue patterns in general; I have a pair of tan Pembrokes and a pair of navy shell Lindricks that I wear all the time, to which I'd be glad to add an Islay at some point. My comments were meant specifically for a boot in the Russian grain leather. The unique texture already has such a strong presence that I tend to prefer designs in which the other details are more subtle. For instance, here's an image of someone else's Radnor 4:

I'd find a blacked out version of this (say on the 365) extremely attractive. Had that been the proposed design, I would have jumped on it immediately. I like the Russian grain Islays that folks have posted from previous runs, just not quite enough to my subjective tastes to commit to a GMTO.

I had previously inquired about hatched Whisky shell after seeing another MTO in it, but the factory doesn’t regularly stock the leather and needs to make special orders from Horween, which limits availability. Apparently, the factory only had enough Whiskey hatch grain for one pair of boots, or I would’ve proposed a GMTO, in case others also liked the makeup…

I also got an email from Alex, I also declined the GMTO (was not on the list), there re a few things on the specs I do not like particularly the comando sole.
And the fact that I just bought a pair of Galway in DOAK/mink suede and I might also buy a pair a Galway in Rosewood CC at the hand next time I go to Amsterdam in December. I also have an MTO in Russian calf with Midas underway, I need to restrain myself a little bit 😂

All the recent talk about high US tariffs being imposed plus C&J's annual price increase looming has motivated me a bit in this regard.

For those unfamiliar with the Galway 2 pattern, @Crafty Cumbrian had this post a few years back on Reddit with a nice little album.
