In a C&J store this weekend (yesterday) they were enticing customers with "this is the price if you buy these shoes today, but this will the the price from monday when we have a price increase"

I mean at least they are saying it. I once was interested in an Alden at a random shoe store. I asked them to put it aside till Monday. When I came back the price has increased 20 % for me 😂 while Alden hadn’t changed anything

From the recent green roughout suede Islay GMTO.
Anyone else finding the boot tight along the bridge of the foot? My pair feels quite cramped and uncomfortable in the throat and vamp areas. For a 365 lasted fit in my usual size, i would have expected it to be more spacious.

Yes. I sent mine back to C&J. I have several pairs of Islays all the same size and the green ones felt a full size smaller.

I reached out to Ms Vigouroux who had me send them to C&J NY since I am in the US. Still waiting on a reply. I am not sure what they can offer for resolution other than a refund but maybe since there is more than one of us with this issue they can remake them since I really wanted the Green RO.

Also, the left boot had a signifiant squeak when walking. I’m hoping the Russian grain arrive issue free otherwise I might be done with C&J MTO for the foreseeable future.

they do have a D 365 last at CJ… it’s for the Japanese market.

There was no discernible difference in length (at least that I could accurately measure) which had me second guessing whether the issue was in my head. However, even with thin dress socks they are unwearable for me and for the few times I tried to wear them thinking it could just be break-in I couldn’t wait to get them off. They are most likely D width.

I doubt its a D last. They cant end up manufacturing 9 pairs and not realise that its not E last.

Width on mine is fine. Length is also fine. It's the throat and in-step that are tight and restrictive. Specially on right foot. I've recently put in shoe trees that have a high in-step to them. That has certainly helped open up the throat of the boot. Better than before. So I am now in a situation where:

Option 1) wear them and break them in and allow for the RO suede to loosen up and stretch with walking.

Option 2) send them in and ask CJ to resolve it where they could pull apart/re-do/re-last a brand new strong boot.

I am hesitant with option 2, and keen to persist with option 1.

2 or 3 with such issues out of a run of what, 7, is a significant failure rate!

Its only failure for them when there are returns that result in refunds. And I dont think refunds are even offered on GMTOs/MTOs

A previous GMTO project just before this one also had 2 out of 6 pairs with some visual defects to the outer shell/leather.

But again, we are talking handmade, many steps and fine technical margins. So such things are bound to happen. Its about the service and after-sales care which is what matters then.

I gave option 1 a shot and saw no improvement but mine feel smaller throughout the entire boot. My other Islays including brown RO required zero break-in out of the box.

As far as option 2 goes, I personally would not want my pair redone if there was an error made during construction. A new pair would be the way to go.

Yes that’s it. It’s how they manage the issue afterwards that counts. Making a new par is not a big deal to them … production is no more than 150 gbp. They will sell the faulty pair in their factory store anyways for double that.
