Crockett & Jones (high end oxford) sizing help

hi all,

I have high arches and bad toes so I generally buy Oxford dress shoes about a half size larger than I maybe otherwise should. I recently purchased a pair of Hand-grade Crockett and Jones black Oxfords. The size I tried a size 9.0 UK and a size 9.5 UK.

The 9.0 UK was slightly snug. I was worried with extended wear my foot would swell and it would become painful as I’ve experienced in the past with other brands, Allen Edmonds, etc. SO, I purchased the 9.5 UK. The associate put a tongue pad and a very thin leather insole in them to help them fit more appropriately. The associate suggeated I purchase the larger of the two pairs and use insoles etc. I still feel the shoes could fit slightly more snug. They’re a touch loose at times.

MY QUESTION FOR YOU IS THIS: has anyone ever had this problem and brought a pair of high end dress shoes to a cobbler to add support or cushioning to the inside of a shoe? If so, what did you ask for? What did they do? And did it work for you?

Thank you!

When i started out buying nice shoes, always foolishly bought 1 size to half size larger and ended up using insoles (because I foolishly though insoles made the shoe more coushy and more comfortable), but eventually became more educated on how shoes should fit to minimize creasing and maximize comfort, then slowly started finding out about more generous fitting lasts from various makers, ie. crockett jones 325, Edward green 202, 606, and various makers that offer F (wide) width shoes.
Sold off my larger fitting / ill fitting collection.
Without knowing and describing your foot condition, its hard to offer advice, if you long toes? short toes? fat toes? shinny toes? maybe try to try all the lasts that crockett jones has and see which last/size fits the best. If none of them fit, move to a different shoemaker that offers a better fit.
If you tell people where you live, they may be able to recommend a store for you to go to try different makers.

Shoegazing blog has a great section on "fit" of the shoe that really educated me.
http://shoegazing.se/english/tag/fit/

Im in between sizes and have wide feet - but small heel, so FWIW as a rule for myself nowadays, I try to get the "more generous fitting" lasts from a RTW last from various makers and size 1/2 down, so the fit is tighter. But I also stick with shoes that have smaller heels, or are hand-lasted (heel part), vass (all handlasted), Edward green (uses manual heel lasting tool), gaziano girling also uses manual heel lasting tool, so for me personally there are things I look for to get the fit right for myself, as I know machine lasted heels with minimal manual input tend to fit too fit loose (ie. crockett and jones).
But some handlasted shoes (Enzo bonafe) still have larger heels because of their last shapes....So its pretty tricky to get the fit right, depends on many factors.
The best thing you can do is to educate yourself and determine for yourself what might improve the fit.

I live in New York City, in Manhattan. So, options are plentiful.

Regarding my foot type.

I have a “pes cavus foot with mild acquired claw toes”.

You can google that and photos will come up.

My feet are totally normal and proportional but my arch is high and my toes tend to bend or claw a little bit. This results in the toe actually raising up some. So, generally a shoe with a wider or more spacious toebox is ideal. My toes are not long, if anything they are short because of the bend involved in them.

Usually the problem I encounter is that when I find a shoe that fits properly from the ball of my foot to the heel, my toes end up feeling squished resulting in pain during the day. So, I’ve been buying them a half size bigger than what I probably should. But they then tend to be a tiny bit loose resulting in heel slippage

Wow that's tough man, didn't know such a condition existed, but if you only need 1/2 size up, then you have hope, based on my limited selection of 20+ lasts I've tried, I would say various Enzo Bonafe lasts, ie. 363MOD last would work good due to their high instep and lots of toe space available.
This is a chart from Enzo Bonafe or ShopMehra forgot which one? https://www.shopmehra.com/collections/enzo-bonafe-shoes
that shows the Enzo bonafe measurements at size 8
