Im thinking of picking up a pair of CJ Chelsea boots from Pediwear. With currency conversion they cost around 435 dollars. Now, I noticed they are not from the handgrade collection, as they do not have any chelsea boots of handgrade quality on the site.

These would be my first pair of English shoes, I plan on getting a handgrade pair of CJ, and eventually some EG and John Lobb, they are difficult for me to find though. What kind of quality can I expect from a non-handgrade pair of shoes from CJ? Are they worth the price? Are they pretty true to size, I typically wear a 10D in US sizing, is that closer to a 9.5 or 9 E on the site?

Thanks

see plal.com. they have some chelsea boots that should cost you under $400. I'll defer to other forumites to comment on quality. FYI, I have to go down one whole size. I wear a 9D US and an 8E fits me in C&J 337 last.

I just got a pair and they are amazing in terms of leather quality and last shape. They are by far my favorite last of anything I own. They are even black and while that often looks boring to me, the shape makes them look awesome even so. And the toe takes a really nice mirror polish, though it took a while.

I usually wear a 10UK or 10.5UK at most in most shoes, but these I took a chance (ebay) and got a 9.5E UK and they fit like a glove. They are very snug, though loosening up a little, but I can leave them on all day and they don't start to hurt, which isn't true of some shoes I've tried that are snug.

So if you're a 10D usually, it's much closer to 9UK in my opinion. For chelseas I think snug fitting is important. They will break in a little bit especially since they are so plain (extra pieces of leather stitched on brogues, for example, restricts how much the leather can stretch).

Good choice!

I recently bought a pair of the C&J Chelseas on the 238 last. Although they are not Handrades, the leather and construction are solid.

I am a US 10D. I wear a UK 9E in the 337 and 348 lasts. The 238 is about 1/2 size too small.

You can also get C&J-made chelsea's at Polo.com. They are called the "Redding", and are very very nice, and likely will go on sale shortly...

Quality? Well, I'll be the only person on this board to admit that above a certain standard I see no differences at all in quality, except in the final polishing and/or antiquing. Details, thats another story, but in basic quality there's all you'll ever need in the benchgrade. (Talking about RTW that fits well here, not bespoke)

Mine did take a while to arrive, in part (apparently) due to a temporary inventory problem they notified me of. But it was less than a month, fwiw.

It's been two months since they shipped them. Time for another email I guess.

That's what you get for living out in the boonies. I can't imagine the mail steamer gets out to your little island more than once a month or so.

I have a pair of Chelsea boots and I also have Chukkas -- both from C&J. I think at that price they are worth it, you can save a bit at PLAL, but even at the Pediwear price they are OK.
For reference, I wear 9.5D in US and in those two boots I wear 8.5E. I think a 9E would probably work.
